ALBARACIN UPSETS MAGBOO, WINS THE WBO ORIENTAL SUPERBANTAMWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

Jesse Albaracin (13W-3L-3D, 11KOs) of Tony Dacer Stable of Davao City knocked out Ni?o Magboo (12W-2L-1D, 5KOs) of the Touchgloves Boxing Gym in the 8th round and in effect grabbed from Magboo the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental Superbantamweight title.

The championship fight was the main event of the boxing show entitled ?Rumble in Muntinlupa? held last Saturday at the Sto. Ni?o Plaza, Brgy. Poblacion, Muntinlupa City.

The fight was Magboo?s first defense of his title that he won via a Unanimous Decision over Ray Las Pi?as last April 17, 2010 at the Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig City.

This writer was one of the judges assigned to this championship fight, along with Salven Lagumbay and Manny Mananquil. The referee was well-respected boxing figure, Bruce McTavish.

It was predicted that the championship fight should be a boxer vs. puncher battle, which was a formula for an exciting and nail-biting war on the squared ring. Fortunately for the spectators who watched the fight live at the venue, the prediction was 100% accurate. Adding to the excitement was the fact that both protagonists were southpaws, which is a very rare instance in boxing matches.

Magboo came out exactly as technical fighter that he was known for. He relied on his superior boxing skills by using his lateral movement while throwing his jab to keep Albaracin at bay. On the other hand, Albaracin being the knockout artist, was always in the face of Magboo from the opening bell and kept the relentless pressure for the whole 3 minutes of every round landing punches on the head and body of the champion. Magboo had success at the first half of the fight fending off Albaracin, while hitting the challenger with his jabs and powerful punches. At the end of the 6th round, Albaracin?s face was bloody and swollen caused by Magboo?s clean punches. The continuous attack of Albaracin paid off starting at the latter part of round 6 as the body punches took its toll on Magboo and the fight was fought in close quarters, to the clear advantage of Albaracin. In the end, Albaracin was too strong for Magboo and the world-renowned referee, Bruce MacTavish was forced to stop the contest in the 8th round awarding Albaracin the win by Technical Knockout.

Here?s the round-by-round summary:

Round 1 ? Both fighters skipped the ?feeling out? stage of the fight and decided to bang at each other with powerful bombs. Magboo had occasional success in circling around Albaracin and used his better boxing skills. However, Albaracin cut off the ring properly and was able to land strong punches on Magboo. Before the end of the round, Albaracin landed a left hook which wobbled Magboo;

Round 2 ? A slambang affair. Both fighters tasted each other?s cracking left hooks and left straights;

Round 3 ? The round was dominated by Magboo using his lateral movement while throwing jab straight combinations on Albaracin. Albaracin proved to be a tough customer and stayed in front of Magboo for the whole round;

Round 4 ? Magboo varied his attack and concentrated to hit the body of Albaracin. On the other hand, Albaracin returned the favour and started to pound the breadbasket of Magboo;

Round 5 ? Both fighters threw bombs at each other during the first half of the round. Albaracin increased his work rate and decided to focus on attacking the body of Magboo;

Round 6 ? A very tactical round showing the intelligence of both boxers. This writer scored the round even;

Round 7 ? Magboo moved excellently around Albaracin. The ring generalship and effective punching was dominated by Magboo;

Round 8 ? Magboo, trapped in the corner, received a right hook followed by a left straight from Albaracin which hit right at the jaw, which resulted to a knockdown scored by the challenger. Magboo bravely stood up and survived the mandatory 8-count by referee McTavish. Smelling blood, Albaracin did not waste time and decided to throw a barrage of strong punches, without any retaliation or defense from Magboo. Seeing the situation, the referee waved off the fight.

The stoppage was another magnificent job by one of the best referees in the world, Bruce McTavish. Magboo was visibly hurt by the barrage of cracking lefts and rights from Albaracin and one more punch surely will cause Magboo to sustain a very serious injury, which might cause him the end of his boxing career. After the fight, this writer asked for the insights of the popular and well-liked veteran boxing official, who was very unselfish in sharing his expertise to this writer as a professor does to his student. Being a professional boxing referee also, this writer learned another lesson from the ?maestro? of ring officiating. According to McTavish, the safety of the boxer should be the primary concern of the referee, every other matter comes in secondary.

The fight was very close at the point of stoppage. After 7 completed rounds, 2 of the 3 judges had a slim margin in favour of Magboo, while the 3rd judge had Albaracin leading by a solitary point. The judges? scorecards read as follows: Salven Lagumbay had it 67-66 in favour of Albaracin; Atty. Danrex Joseph Tapdasan (this writer) saw it 68-66 with Magboo leading; and Manny Mananquil scored it 67-66 for Magboo.

The championship fight was supervised by the hardworking Vice President of World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific, Leon Panoncillo, Jr., ably assisted by the member of the WBO Asia-Pacific Executive Committee, Tony Comia.

The spectacular boxing match will be shown on the weekly boxing show SAVED BY THE BELL. This show is shown every Sundays on Solar TV-RPN and every Mondays on Solar Sports.
