BOXING FANS DISMAYED OVER 'PHILS. VS. THE WORLD' RESULTS By Edward Ligas PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Aug 2010 It was a jam-packed crowd inside the Pacific Grand Ball Room of Waterfront Hotel and Casino, where the boxing event held and broadcast by giant television network ABS-CBN. The boxing extravaganza lined-up two (2) Mexicans, a Korean and Indonesian against our Pinoy warriors. The main event featured Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista against Alejandro "Zorrito" Barrera, who happened to be the cousin of Mexican Legendary great Marco Antonio Barrere. Bautista and Barrera gamely fought each other punch for punch. In several instances, Barrera was hit by power shots by Boom Boom but the former came also with his own combinations of punches that staggered the latter repeatedly. It was a competitive fight showing both combatants eagerness to win the fight. Barrera's nose was bloodied but he survived in first three rounds. The end came at 1:44 in the fourth round, when referee Tony Pesons saw a cut at the right eyelid of Barrera. Upon the recommendation of the ring physician the fight was stopped by the referee. The referee ruled that the cut was caused by a legal punch. When Boom Boom was declared a winner by TKO, a loud boos reverberated inside the Pacific Ball Room. In supporting main event, Milan "Milenyo" Milendo intimidated the Korean Champ before the start of the fight. In a superb display of skills and power, the warrior from Cagayan de Oro City, showed no mercy in hammering the Korean. In the second round, a thunderous left uppercut and left hook landed to the eye socket that crashing the Korean into the canvass. He failed to stand the count. It was an impressive win for Melindo, who is ripe now for a world title fight. Other bouts, Jimrex "The Executioner" Jaca easily disposed the unprepared, awkward and maybe did not train Pipino Cuevas Jr. before the end of round one. A strong left straight landed to the jaw of Cuevas Jr. that sent him into the canvas. He did not mind the count and just sit on the canvas. Right after the fight, I went to the comfort room, an American national, who did not want to be named commented, "Cuevas Jr. is a disgrace to his father and Mexican fighters, he came to Cebu not to fight but just to receive his purse. He is certainly a bum and patsy, I hope that next promotion will be a good match-up coz the paying public will be at the losing end. I always come to watch the fight here in Waterfront but this is not good." In the parking area or basement, Marites Solon, a resident of Barangay Labangon, Cebu City, together her husband and barkadas said "walay lami ug wala mi matagbaw, si Cuevas maayo lang sa porma, siguro kusinero o gasoline boy lang siya kay dili kamao moaway." (The fight was not good, we were not satisfied, Cuevas is good looking, but maybe he is just a cook or gasoline boy coz he did not know to fight.") Old folks in the basement shared the same comments. However, they were really impressed the fight of former Minimum Weight Champion Florante Condes, who pummeled the tough and gutsy Indonesian Sofyand Effindi, The Indonesian was even knocked down in the sixth round but survived and finished the eight round. The former champ still a strong contender in his division. But the biggest appreciation went to Jojo "Flash" Intor. The upset fans said "maayo pa puro nalang Intor kay malingaw ug malipay pa mi inig uli. It's better to have all Intor fights at least, we will be happy in going home. The same reaction in our radio program Pinoy Boxing over DYHP, where fans expressed disgust the fight at the Waterfront. They just want more actions last night but we don't have control of the outcome. We understand the sentiments of the fans and boxing aficionados but for a boxing judge and writer, we know that in boxing one punch can stop the fight in any round.
