Ward Perfect Against Green

PhilBoxing.com

Oakland, Ca--- In front of 8,797 fans at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, WBA Super Middleweight Champion, Andre Ward, successfully made his first defense of his title by shutting out Allan Green over 12 dominate rounds.

The bout opened up with both fighters trying to size each other up. However, once Ward was able to corner Green on the ropes and place his head close to Green?s chest, he started to take over the fight. Green was known as the harder puncher, but Ward was able to effectively get inside Green?s longer arms and work his opponent with sharp punches on the inside, negating Green?s advantage. Dominant inside fighting has been a trademark of Andre Ward in the past few fights. And this fight was no different.

Although you can make an argument that Green looked rusty, slow, and uninspired, the same was said about Ward?s last opponent, Kessler, who looked equally as bad against Ward as Green did. As it stands right now, Ward is the type of fighter who simply makes his opponents look awful.

As the fight continued, Ward had chances to stop Green, but Green was in total survival mode and was able to remain on his feet till the final bell. The official score tallies had Ward the shutout winner, 120-108 on all three cards.

With the decision victory, Ward takes the lead in the standings with 4 total points in the Super 6 Round Robin Preliminary round. Ward is now assured of moving on to the semi-final single elimination round in 2011. However, Ward still has to defend his title against fellow Olympian, Andre Dirrell, who has 2 points and must win in order to move on to the semi-finals. Despite the bad lost, Allan Green has another title shot in his next fight against newly crowned WBC titlist, Mikkel Kessler.

After the bout, Ward explained, ?Our plan was always to go inside, but after the second round. I expected a tougher fight from Green.? Regarding his next opponent, Ward said, ?Andre Dirrell is a difficult opponent and we?ll deal with him in the next fight.?

Allan Green knew he lost the bout but explained that after 3 training camps since December, he was too weak to win the fight. He learned a lot from fighting Ward. He felt he trained hard but not effectively.

As it stands after two rounds, Ward is in the lead with 4 points. Ward is followed by Arthur Abraham (3 points), Mikkel Kessler (2 points), Andre Dirrell (2 points), Carl Froch (2 points), and Allan Green (0 points).
