WBO GOES BEYOND BOXING By Edward Ligas PhilBoxing.com Sat, 12 Jun 2010 Exactly 112 years ago today, we declared our independence after our heroes fought against the tyranny of the Spaniards. We just also held the historic poll automation last May 10, 2010. The winners have already been proclaimed. But the election was still hounded by controversy after the Koala Boy, claimed that he was one of the operators on the alleged massive cheating. Nevertheless, my candidates whom I worked with last election like Senators-elect Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr., who was once an amateur boxer, and Ralph Recto, Congressman-elect Luigi Quisumbing, 6th District Province of Cebu, and Mayor-elect Michael Rama of Cebu City, won by a landslide. Election is over, it's now time to walk the talk and address the major problems on extreme poverty, massive graft and corruption and peace and order. There is no doubt that President-elect Noynoy Aquino is incorruptible but we should be vigilant for a possible emergence of Ka Klase Incorporated. The prestigious World Boxing Organization (WBO) under the leadership of amiable, hardworking and indefatigable Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel, has been very busy in giving rightful contenders an opportunity to fight for a world title fight. WBO has not only produced the best boxer in the planet but also the first boxer elected as representative in the House of Congress in the name of Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao otherwise known in boxing world as Pacman. The Pacman dismantled the Chiongbian Dynasty in Sarangani Province as he promised the poor people in for a better life under his reign through the delivery of basic social services. Like Pacman, WBO is also committed to help the poor. Early this year, WBO had conducted a series of outreach programs in the Philippines. WBO Boxing officials in coordination with promoter Samson Gello-ani and Wellness, a non-government organization, conducted a feeding program in the Island of Pandanon, Province of Bohol. We fed almost 500 children in the island. There was no amount of words that can describe how the children and their parents extended heartfelt gratitude to WBO. The feeding program will continue this coming month of September, this time in one of the slum areas in Cebu City. Then, last May 14, 2010, WBO in coordination with promoter Samson Gello-ani, distributed 100 bags (backpack) with school supplies to the teens of Barangay Mabolo, coming from the poorest of the poor family on the said barangay. The teens and their parents were very happy as the distribution was timely for the opening of classes. The bags looked nice and durable certainly will last last for years. During the distribution, Leon Panoncillo, WBO Vice-President for Asia-Pacific and Africa, who personally handed the bags to the teenagers said, "WBO is committed to help the poor as part of our corporate and social responsiblity. Indeed, this is not a long term solution to global poverty but at least to some extent, this can ease the burden of poor families." Lately, WBO extended assistance to Z Gorres by providing his long time wish. WBO bought a set of elegant dining showcase and TV set and refrigerator for his family. This was a big help for Z's family, who needed most after his untimely retirement. This was done through the stewardship of Panoncillo. The commitment of WBO to help the poor is maybe not a long-term solution to combat global poverty. But at least, it has fulfilled its Christian obligation by sharing its resources not only to the boxers but most of all the poor people in this world. Long Live WBO!
