Jaro Wins IBF Pan-Pacific Belt, Solmiano is RP Lightweight Champ By Salvador Lopez PhilBoxing.com Tue, 01 Jun 2010 Two-time world title challenger and former RP light-flyweight champ Sonny Boy Jaro became the new IBF Pan Pacific light flyweight titleholder after knocking out deposed champion Arman de la Cruz in the 6th round of the main event of the ?Mandirigmang Pinoy ? Bakbakan sa Eastwood City? (Pinoy Warriors - Slugfest at Eastwood City?) held last night at Eastwood, Pasig City. The end came when a Jaro combination to both sides of the body dropped de la Cruz for the first time, taking the gas out of the latter that he was unable to beat the count. Prior to the stoppage, the fight was a fought at competitive level with de la Cruz using good ring generalship to elude Jaro?s big shots while countering. Jaro, who reportedly had a hard time making the weight and had to use the sauna to sweat out the excess weight after which he was given dextrose to recover, appeared to be tiring as the rounds progressed even though he was able to land in a few hard punches to the head and body that ultimately took their toll on de la Cruz. Meanwhile, Jay Solmiano, who like Jaro represents the Elorde Shaw Boxing Stable, became the new RP lightweight champion winning the vacant crown over Chris Alag via a 4th round disqualification due to the latter?s repeated low blows. Solmiano had just started having his momentum when Alag decided to mix it up with the former ? but way off the target. Prior to the stoppage, Alag had already deducted a point for repeated infractions. Referee Silvestre Abainza finally decided to disqualify him when it was obvious that the defiant Alag was deliberately playing it dirty targeting the foul area to avoid getting knocked out. Other Results: Elmar Francisco scored a mild upset over the favored Prell Tupaz in their 10-round bantamweight bout knocking the latter down twice enroute to winning a UD by the score of 98-90 in all three judges? cards; Louie Bantigue defeated Arjet Caballes winning by a UD (78-73, 79-73, 78-74) in their 8-round bantamweight bout; Rodel Quilaton scored an 8-round knockout over Mike Romulo in their 8-round flyweight bout which was a see-saw battle until Quilaton scored a huge left early in the eight for his first knockdown; Dennis Tubieron, going into the fight at 5-0, scored a TKO when his opponent Jay Balido surprisingly quit in the 4th round of their scheduled bantamweight 8-rounder; Vergel Nebran defeated Anthony Balubar via a 5th round TKO in their scheduled bantamweight 6-rounder; Bobby Conception defeated Redney Quezon via a 6th round TKO in their scheduled 6-round flyweight bout; Eduardo Buag outboxed Julian Abines for a UD win (39-37 in all three judges? scorecards) in their 4-round featherweight bout; Rennel Flechero scored three knockdowns in the 1st round for an automatic TKO win over Joselito Abache in their bantamweight bout scheduled for 4 rounds; and Rowell Rosia scoring a 4th round TKO over Jay-R Emata in their light-flyweight bout scheduled for 4 rounds. The boxing event was presented by the TV program ?In this Corner? in cooperation with Arci Boxing Promotions. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salvador Lopez. ![]() |
