PINOY BOXERS IN TOUGH FIGHTS FRIDAY IN BANGKOK

PhilBoxing.com

BANGKOK -- Three Filipino boxers are scheduled to see action against tough Thai opponents Friday (May 14) at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

Two of the fights are 12 rounders for regional WBO titles while the third one is a non title 6-rounder. But all fights are extremely hard for the Filipino visitors as they will face tough Thai fighters promoted by well known boxing patron Mr. Kokiet Panichayarom, head of the Kokiet Group.

In the main event Filipino fighter Adonis Aguelo (8-1-1) from Maasin, whose last fight was a loss by points for the Filipino featherweight title, will get into the ring for the WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight title against veteran Thai Sod Kokietgym (44-2-1), whose only two loses where tittle fights against Mexican warrior Daniel Ponce de Leon.

The second Filipino in Friday's card is superfeatherweight Jovie Merca (11-6-1) who is schedule to face experienced 28 years-old Thai warrior Terdsak Kokietgym (39-3-1) for the WBO Oriental 130 lbs title. Terdsak Kokietgym's loses has been against well known fighters Joan Guzman, Steve Luevano and the Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez. This is a tough appointment for the kid from Butuan City.

The third Pinoy seeing action is Gensan native Michael Rodriguez (7-19) who is making his 7th fight in Thai territory (all loses). This time he will face Pigmy Kokietgym (40-5-2) whose last loss was back in December of 2002.

Pigmy Kokietgym is widely expected to dismantle Filipino Rodriguez while reporters in attendance wondered how the Filipino GAB Boxing Division allows the modest Pinoy fighter to travel to Thailand fo be victimized by such a formidable opponent.

Pinoy and Thai fighters have all passed successfully the medical examinations required by the Thai authorities and made the required weight during the presscon celebrated this afternoon at the 13 Coins Hotel at Ngam Won Wan, Bangkok.

Attending the weigh-in ceremony were Nicolas Omathkul, Vice president of Kokiet Group, Boxing reporter Kazuto Harada from Japan and Mr. Narong Wongprasertkan, owner of Thai boxing gloves "Twins".

Filipino fighters here in Thailand are inspired by the recent victory of their kababayan Cebuano fighter Randy Suico who weeks ago travelled to Korea as a underdog, and against all odds emerged victorious by a prescribing a KO to his Korean opponent Ng-Suk Kwak and proclaiming himself as the new OPBF light welterweight champion.

Earlier this year, modest Cebuano fighter Fernando Otic (11-6) came to Thailand to score and impressive, unexpected KO against formidable Thai the former world champion Somsak Sithchatchawal (60-3-3).

"These fights might look tough for the Filipinos, but Filipinos have big heart, they are always very dangerous, very dangerous fighters," says Nicolas Omathkul of Kokiet Group Thursday.

Friday's card will be broadcasted in Thailand open TV by Channel 7. The live telecast begins at 3 pm Bangkok time.
