Ramonal Defeats Gonzales, Captures RP Superbantam Crown By Salvador Lopez PhilBoxing.com Mon, 26 Apr 2010 Jhuriel Ramonal became the new RP super-bantamweight champion after defeating Sonny Gonzales in 11 exciting rounds in Saturday?s main event of the Bakbakan sa Binan held at the Binan Sports Plaza, Binan, Laguna. Hungry for the coveted title, the two protagonists showed their determination by slugging it out for the entire bout giving the crowd their money?s worth. The young Ramonal, who fights out of the Wow Magic Sing Boxing Stable of Binan, Laguna, repeatedly nailed the perennial contender Gonzales with huge shots and was in control for most part of the fight. Nonetheless, Gonzales, who fights out of the Tiger City Stable of Mandaluyong and who once gave Bernabe Concepcion a tough time in their September 2006 bout, proved his resilience and out of willpower, managed to stay on his feet. Not to be denied, Ramonal proved to be the better man that night even absorbing well the hard shots connected by Gonzales. Several cuts were sustained by Ramonal from accidental headbutts that occurred during the fight and resulted into points deduction on Gonzales. Eventually, the referee had the fight stopped in the 11th round upon the advice of the ringside physician when another accidental headbutt had Ramonal?s cut dripping a lot blood and turning his face into a bloody mess. In the end, Ramonal was declared the winner via a unanimous technical decision by identical scores of 106-101 for all three judges and deservedly crowned as the new RP super-bantamweight champion. In the bout supporting the main event held at the 117-lb. limit, Daniel Ferreras, also of the Wow Magic Sing Boxing Stable, imposed his will in the early going against Ryan Origenes of the Marty Elorde Boxing Stable en route to winning a technical unanimous decision. The former RP super-flyweight champion was pounding Origenes with hard punches to the body from which the latter was wilting in pain that it looked like the bout will not be going for long. However, Origenes managed to hang on, thanks partly to the bout interruption as a result of Ferreras sustaining cuts from accidental headbutt. Origenes was beginning to get himself back into the fight and appeared to be on his way of gaining the upper-hand when the bout was stopped due to the severity of the cuts sustained by Ferreras. (Saturday night turned out to be a bloody day for the Wow Magic Sing boxers). When the scorecards were turned over, Ferreras emerged the winner by the scores of 67-64 (twice) and 66-65. Rounding off the results of the card: Ronald Pontillas of the Wildcard Boxing Gym scored a 7th round KO victory over Joan de Guia in their super-featherweight fight (scheduled for 10 rounds) capped by a vicious body shot to the body that had the latter wilting in pain; Richard Pumicmic of the Wow Magic Sing Stable utilized a vastly-improved jab to beat Junel Alibio to the punch en route to scoring a unanimous decision victory in their 10-round super-bantamweight; Wildcard Boxing Gym?s rising star Allan Tanada had his toughest test so far in Randy Migrino (who curiously resembles the looks and fighting stance of Randy Suico) trading bombs with the latter but his quickness and versatility of his punches soon proved to be the difference as he finally dropped his opponent with a combination in the 5th round en route to scoring a TKO win in the same round in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds at the super-bantamweight limit; In another bout scheduled for 8 rounds at the 110-lb limit, Jeffrey Cerna of the Wow Magic Sing Stable was giving Edison Berwela some lessons on infighting until the latter refused to go out for the 5th round, thus, yielding the latter a 4th round TKO win; Rex Olisa of the Elorde Gilmore Boxing Gym once again showed his heavy hands when he dropped Jessie Tuyor twice in the first round in their 8-round 116-lb fight for a TKO victory and registering his second consecutive TKO win; In a bout held at the 106 lb. limit scheduled for 6 rounds, Raymart Toyco of the Toyco Boxing Gym survived an early scare from Leonardo Talisic after the latter nailed him with several big rights to the head but quickly recovered to score punishing punches to Talisic?s body forcing the latter to quit in the very first round; Jesamie dela Zerna of the Tiger City Boxing Gym dropped Zoren Pama in the first round en route to scoring a majority decision victory in their 4-round 109-lb. bout; and Matthew Toyco of the Toyco Boxing Gym defeated Raprap Ramonal via a unanimous decision in their 4 round 122-lb. fight for the night?s opener. The event was presented by ?In this Corner? in cooperation with the city government of Binan and Mayor Lenlen Alonte. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salvador Lopez. ![]() |
