RICKY VARGAS HAS FRUITFUL MEETING WITH AIBA PRESIDENT IN CHINA
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 09 Apr 2010
 Ricky Vargas.
The president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) Ricky Vargas has had what he described as ?a wonderful meeting? with the president of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Dr. Ching-kuoWu of Chinese-Taipei.
In an overseas telephone conversation from China where he was watching the semi finals of the inaugural China Open boxing tournament being held in Guiyang City in Guizhou Province, Vargas also disclosed that the participation of the Philippines in the recent 32nd edition of the King?s Cup in Thailand had not been approved by the ABAP since the tournament itself was not sanctioned by the international governing body, AIBA.
Vargas, who is in China with executive director Ed Picson and secretary general Patrick ?Pato? Gregorio, said he had been informed by the AIBA president that the countries that sent fighters to the President?s Cup would be reprimanded.
Relations between the AIBA president and the head of the Thai Amateur Boxing Association, Police General Taweep Chantararoj have soured over the past year even as Dr. Wu has sought to break the seeming influence Gen. Taweep had with former discredited AIBA president Anwar Chowdhry which several countries including the Philippines under the father-and-son tandem of former presidents Mel and Manny Lopez had condemned.
Although Mel Lopez headed the three-man team to Bangkok for the King?s Cup, he himself has had troubled relations with Gen. Taweep which reached a high point when Lopez had Filipino boxers pull-out of the finals of the Southeast Asian Games staged in Thailand in 2007.
In the just concluded King?s Cup the ?A? team of Thailand won 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal which enabled Thailand to win its ninth consecutive team championship trophy while Russia finished second and the Thai ?B? team third.
