MELLIGEN MAY SEE ACTION ON APRIL 8 By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 10 Mar 2010 ![]() Welterweight Mark Jason Melligen, fresh from a 6th round TKO victory over previously undefeated Raymund Gatica in the “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton last February 13 may see action against tough Norberto “Demonio” Gonzalez on April 8 in Las Vegas. Melligen himself told us of the planned bout during a welcome party hosted by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN which telecast the “Pinoy Power” fights in the Philippines. The hard-hitting southpaw who returned to Las Vegas to resume training said he learned that Gonzalez was a tough opponent. The 28 year old Mexican has a record of 18-1 with 12 knockouts and won the vacant Mexican title with a unanimous twelve round decision over Manuel Garcia last November 18. Boxingscene.com’s Mark Vester said they were told that a scheduled fight between Gonzalez and welterweight contender Jesus Soto Karass (24-4-3, 16KO) is not going to push through in the card to be televised by Fox Sports as part of the Top Rank Live series. Instead Mark Melligen (17-2, 13KOs) is going to see action. Boxingscene.com reported that Top Rank is trying to put the Filipino southpaw in place of Soto Karass but Gonzalez has not yet agreed to fight Melligen. Melligen who has sparred with Floyd Mayweather Jr and helped both Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander by sparring with them in preparation for their successful title fights almost lost his spot on the Top Rank roster after dropping a split decision to Michel Rosales but his impressive victory over Gatica convinced promoter Bob Arum to keep him in the fold.
