NO ASIAN JUDGES IN KAMEDA-PONGSAKLEK WBC FLYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT

PhilBoxing.com

World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman says the three judges in the much awaited WBC flyweight title fight between Japan’s Koki Kameda and former champion and reigning interim title holder Pongsaklek Wonjongkam will not be Asians but instead from the United States and Europe.

The WBC president who is on an eight-day visit to Thailand during which he received an honorary doctorate degree from Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University last March 1 arrived in Bangkok with his son Fernando Sulaiman last February 25 and was warmed welcomed by WBC governor Edward Thangarajah, Thai promoter Wirat Wachiraratanawong and his two WBC champions flyweight “interim” title holder Thai Pongsaklek Wonjongkam and straw weight Oleydong Sithsamerchai.

The 79-year-old Sulaiman told the Thai media that he wanted to act as fight supervisor but would have to assign a representative instead due to his age and health issues.

The assurances of Sulaiman about fairness in the judging apparently didn’t satisfy Pongsaklek’s promoters Wirat and Piyarat Wachiratanawong who said Sulaiman’s assurance was not enough for them and they would not be comfortable until the names of judges are revealed.

In addition to the bout of Kameda vs. Pongsaklek, the March 27 at Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo will also host the WBC stawweight title match of Thai champion Oleydong Sithsamerchai vs. Japanese challenger Yasutaka Kuroki.

Pongsaklek who has already fought Koki Kameda claimed in an interview with Thai media that the Japanese was “a man with poor manner who is not respectful”. Pongsaklek expressed confidence he would beat Kameda since he had trained hard for over six weeks.

Pongsaklek’s promoter Wirat said there is no arrangement after the title defense bout but Pongsaklek may have a chance for a rematch against Naito Diasuke.

Oleydong, also scheduled to fight in the same event, said he has studied the Japanese challenger Yasutaka Kuroki who won an OPBF title last November. He said Kuroki is not an accurate puncher but is a southpaw with speed. Oleydong who is himself a southpaw said he would fight cautiously and not underestimate the Japanese.
