By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Tue, 23 Feb 2010

WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol of Mandaue City, Philippines is set to make his first title defense this February 28 (Manila Time) against Omar Ni?o Romero of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
?I am going to bring the title back to Mexico", vowed the Mexican challenger during the press conference held Monday in Mexico wherein he met face to face the defending champion.
Last June 2009, Romero earned the right to fight for the title when he beat another Filipino, Juanito Rubillar by 8th round technical decision in a WBC title eliminator in Cancun,Mexico. Romero also has a one win and one no decision record against Brian Viloria in two WBC title contests. In 2002,Romero beat
Edgar Sosa by ten round unanimous decision. This is the same Sosa who Mayol dethroned last year.
Their fight which will be held at the Olympic Theater of the University of Guadalajara. Mayol finished training at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood and left for Mexico last Sunday (L.A. Time). He will be backed by trainers Jesse Arevalo and Morai Quijano.
The 33 year old Romero (28-3-1, 11 KO) will try to avenge the loss of his countryman Edgar Sosa, who lost to Mayol last November 21, 2009 by second round TKO in Chiapas,Mexico. Team Sosa protested after the fight claiming that it was Mayol's headbutt that cost their boxer the title but the WBC upheld Mayol's win.
The 28 year old Mayol (26-4-1, 20 KO) on the other hand vowed to keep the title for the Philippines and his family. He also said that he wants to show why he is the world champion. Prior to beating Sosa, Mayol has fought twice in Mexico beating Lorenzo Trejo by 4th round TKO in 2006 and losing to Adrian Hernandez by 4th round KO in 2008.
Mayol entered the year ranked number 77 in Ring magazine's top 100 fighters and third among the light flyweights.
