SONSONA’S WEIGHT NO PROBLEM
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 18 Feb 2010

The weight of “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona as he prepares for his WBO super bantamweight title fight against Wilfredo Vaquez Jr, son of the illustrious former world champion won’t be a problem as he is just five pounds over the 122 pound limit with ten days to go before the February 27 showdown in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Sonsona’s weight is very different from that of Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales who was 12 pounds over the bantamweight limit just six days before his title fight with WBO champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel and had to virtually starve for a week to make the weight.
The weight loss drained and weakened Morales who went down in agony after receiving one vicious blow to the mid-section in the opening round and was knocked out.
Sonsona who trained with Morales at the Kennel Boxing Gym in California under Nonito Donaire Sr looked good in a workout at the Wilfredo Gomez Gym in Guaynabo following his arrival in Puerto Rico with Donaire Sr and Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani.
Sonsona who is undefeated with a record of 14-0-1, 12 KO’s) is looking to win his second world title in less than six months having won the WBO super flyweight crown with a smashing twelve round decision over Jose “Carita” Lopez also of Puerto Rico last September
Sonsona’s opponent Wilfredo Vazquez Jr is also undefeated with a record of 17-0-1, 14 knockouts.
Sonsona lost the title when he failed to make the weight in his first title defense last November at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada which was the same venue where he win the title.
Sonsona said he was in great shape for the title shot both physically and mentally adding “I’ve really done multiple sessions of twelve rounds with no problem. I am extremely fit and ready for the title fight.”
