GORRES STARTS REHAB By Rod Mijares PhilBoxing.com Mon, 25 Jan 2010 I arrived at Dr. Benito Calderon’s clinic around 5:00 p.m. this afternoon where Z Gorres just finished rehab administered by Filipina physical therapist Jona T. Jimenez. Ms. Jimenez is part of 4-Filipino physical therapists at University Medical Center Hospital who were taking turns in administering therapy to Z Gorres while he was still in the hospital. The other three are Roel de Jesus, John Cambangay and Alma Halili. Ms. Jimenez was discussing with Dr. Calderon and Datches what are to be expected for Gorres’ comprehensive rehabilitation that will start on Monday, January 25, 2010 at Dr. Maria Rica Gaerlan’s clinic which is about a mile away from Dr. Calderon’s clinic. Ms. Jimenez was also instructing Datches what to do to help her husband and what educational materials that maybe available to them. They were so excited to tell me that Z Gorres just walked and covered 1-1/2 length of the clinic’s aisle which I surmised as about 40-45 feet long altogether. No wonder Z was slumped on the sofa opposite Dr. Calderon’s table tired from the exercise. However, his wit and sense of humor was still evident as he told Dr. Calderon that they should both dance hip hop at the fund raising event on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Salo-Salo restaurant. Some of the therapies that Ms. Jimenez is administering free of charge which she is conducting during her free time are strengthening exercises of left upper extremity and lower extremity and re-training; endurance training; sit to stand activities; standing balance and tolerance and gait training. Z Gorres performed another gait training in my presence trying to show off what he could do. The most difficult part was from sitting position to standing up raising his body to the walker. He still has to be helped by Ms. Jimenez and Datches holding him on both sides. It’s painful to watch. It’s like there’s a needle that poked your heart and yet from his eyes and from his still weak body you could see and feel his grit determination and perseverance to overcome all odds. How can you not be touched by his tenacity? You knew he was hurting and you have that feeling to rush to him and hug him for trying to recover fast and tell him that it’s OK to go slow, little by little. How can you not love this guy? As he may be your brother, your cousin, your nephew, your father or your friend trying to smile from this burden even though he is hurting deep inside. He is showing an insurmountable will to overcome this God’s test of his young life. And every one of us is lucky to be a witness and be a part of his miracle and his fight to gain back his once colorful and promising life. No wonder, Dr. Benito Calderon has been hooked to Z’s adversity and will see to it that Z will recover and forever check on him wherever he is. “He is the same old Z. Joking. He is trying. He has the will to get better and he is recovering as expected. It will just take a long time and we will take it day by day,” Tony Martin said. “Masaya ako at mabilis ang paggaling niya. Inspirado ako sa kaniya. Nilalabanan niya kung ano man ang nararamdaman niya. Matapang na bata talaga si Z” (I am happy that he is recovering fast. I am inspired because of him. He is fighting whatever is hurting him. Z is a brave young man), Mark Melligen who was also at the clinic said. Please visit www.ZGorres.info for more update on fundraising effort on his behalf.
