GEJON TO SPAR WITH MAYOL NEXT WEEK
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 19 Aug 2005
World Boxing Association no. 1 minimumweight Eriberto "Yukka" Gejon will start sparring with World Boxing Council no. 1 minifly Rodel Mayol next week as the former prepares for his September 25 challenge of WBA 105-lb champ Yutaka Niida at the 20,000-capacity Yokohama Arena in Japan.
Gejon and Mayol, both undefeated, were teammates during their amateur days under Cebu boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer, and have vowed to help each other in their respective quest of the WBC and WBA titles.
Gejon, managed by king-maker Rex "Wakee" Salud, holds a perfect 21-0-1, 13 KO's record, while Mayol, now managed by Japan's Yasuo Matsuoka, owns an immaculate 21-0, 16 KO's slate.
Mayol arrived in Cebu early last Thursday from his Japan training stint, and is expected to report to the gym next week.
"Sparring with Rodel will be a big help in my preparation," said Gejon in an interview. The lanky fighter has already logged in rounds with Louie Bantigue, Ricardo Albia and Jojo Bardon.
Meanwhile, reports coming out of Japan have indicated that Niida has also hired Mexican flyweights Luis "El Dulcero" Martinez and undefeated Daniel Saldivar, a nephew of former world featherweight champ Vicente Saldivar, to help him prepare for the talented Gejon.
