PENALOSA TO BEGIN TRAINING AT THE WILD CARD GYM PhilBoxing.com Mon, 11 Jan 2010 Former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa (54-7-2, 36 KO’s) was scheduled to leave for Los Angeles on Sunday night aboard a Philippine Airlines flight to begin training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in preparation for his February 13 WBO bantamweight title eliminator against another former two-division champion Eric Morel (41-2, 21 O’s) of Puerto Rico. Penalosa will be one of five Filipino boxers scheduled to see action on the blockbuster “Pinoy Power III” promotion of Bob Arum’s Top Rank with the fights to be telecast in the Philippines by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN. The others are WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito Donaire (22-1, 14 KO’s) who faces dangerous Gerson Guerrero (34-8, 26 KO’s) of Mexico, Bernabe Concepcion (27-3-1, 15 KO’s) who clashes with hard-hitting Mario Santiago (21-1-1, 14 KO’s) of Puerto Rico, undefeated Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales (14-0, 8 KO’s) who battles WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (39-2-2, 29 KO’s) and welterweight Mark Jason Melligen (16-2, 12 KO’s) who engaged former WBO super featherweight champion Mike Anchondo (36-2, 19 KO’s) of the United States. Penalosa said he was in good shape “because I am like a boy scout, always prepared” even as he expressed confidence that he could handle Morel. Penalosa conceded that Morel who had bragged he would punish the Filipino veteran was “good but lets see what will happen” even as he expressed the hope that it would be a good fight so that his Filipino countrymen would be pleased. The former WBC super flyweight and WBO bantamweight champion has been training at the Market Place Mall in Mandaluyong over the past seven days and will continue his training under Roach the moment he arrives in Los Angeles. He said “I am always well prepared in all of my fights and this fight is no exception because I am no longer a young man and as long as there is an opportunity for me to train, I train.” Talking about his prot?g? southpaw featherweight Michael Farenas who later on scored a first round knockout over Thai patsy Penalosa said “I believe in him because first and foremost he is strong and he is brave and works hard besides being a good person.” Penalosa said “all the help I give him is because I want him to be a champion. Even if he leaves me after becoming a world champion I will still be very happy. I have made a commitment to him and I will keep it. I only hope he gets a break anytime so we can add one more world champion” to the roster of reigning Filipino world champions. |
