GEJON LOOKS SHARP IN TRAINING
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 26 Jul 2005
Just hours after his official challenge for the WBA crown was officially announced in Tokyo last Monday, undefeated WBA no. 2 Eriberto "Yukka" Gejon has already justified his crack at the title, looking extremely sharp and focused during training yesterday at the Flores Gym in Mandaue City.
Gejon (21-0-1, 13 KO's) battles WBA 105-lb king Yutaka Niida (18-1-3, 8 KO's) on September 25 at the Yokohama Arena in Japan.
"I'm here to do my job, which is to wrest the crown off Yutaka Niida. I'm a professional, and I'm going to fly to Japan in the best shape possible," said the lanky, 27-year-old fighter from Mandaue City.
Gejon shadow-boxed, hit the heavy bag, and did some leg exercises yesterday under the watchful eyes of trainer Brix Flores, who had just arrived from his Japan sojourn accompanying Malcolm Tunacao and another ward, Rodel Mayol.
"Right now, we are already in the period of subjecting him under heavy training. His morning runs are varied, and we are incorporating some upper body workout in his regimen. He will be in tremendous shape come fight night," avers the soft-spoken Flores during a lull in training at his gym.
The 5'7 Gejon will come into the fight enjoying height and reach advantage over the shorter Niida. However, the Japanese world champion has already downplayed Gejon's height advantage, saying this will in fact work to his advantage.
"My opponent is tall but he looks like he can't take a hard punch. He's my favorite type of opponent," said Niida, as quoted by Japan Today.
