TU?ACAO TKO'S JAPANESE PUG IN 7TH RD!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 18 Jul 2005
Former World Boxing Council flyweight boss Malcolm Tunacao, now campaigning as a superfly, yesterday served strong notice as he easily stopped Japanese Ryoichi Hidaka in the seventh round of a scheduled tenner underneath the WBC superfly battle at the Central Gym in Osaka, Japan.
It was a highly one-sided affair, as the WBC no. 7 Tunacao peppered the Japanese at will with his bread-and-butter left straight, prompting the referee to stop the fight at the 1:10 mark of the seventh frame.
The bout was an undercard of the WBC superfly battle between reigning champ Katsushige Kawashima and Masamori Tokuyama, their third encounter.
The Mandaue City-based Tunacao, now managed by Tokyo-based Japanese Yasuo Matsuoka, used his left straight to the hilt to befuddle Hidaka, although there was no knockdown in the fight.
By the fifth, Hidaka began bleeding from his nose, and was was cut in the sixth on his right eyebrow following a barrage by the Filipino lefty.
The win improved Tunacao's record to 18 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws with 13 knockout victories, and lines him up for another possible world title opportunity in the near future.
Last February 14, Tunacao also disposed of Japanese Takafumi Himeno, making him undefeated in 8 fights since surrendering the WBC flyweight title to Pongsaklek Wongjongkam in early 2001.
