Tinampay Edges Nazareno to Retain RP Welter Crown By Salvador Lopez PhilBoxing.com Tue, 27 Oct 2009 Arniel Tinampay successfully retained his RP welterweight crown by scoring a split decision victory over Dan Nazareno in last Saturday night’s main event of the “Muntinlupa Slugfest” held at the BLISS Compound Gym at Muntinlupa, Metro Manila. Nazareno did not hide his intention and immediately went after Tinampay at the start of the bell for the starting round. At that time, he was successful in imposing his size and reach advantage and scored some telling punches in the early rounds in which he appeared to have Tinampay in trouble. However, Tinampay soon found succour with his clinching strategy which he used to stifle his opponent’s attack and reduced the latter’s offensive options. Such strategy proved successful as Nazareno did not seem to find an effective counter throughout the bout. As the match progressed, Tinampay soon obtained the upper-hand and scored several crisp one two combos using accurate timing that eventually enabled him to score a split decision victory by the following scores: Judges Narciso Martinez and Gil Co have 117-111, 118-110 respective scores for Tinampay whilst Judge Ricardo Canlas had it 115-113 for Nazareno. International Referee Ferdinand Estrella was the third man in the ring. In the supporting main event featuring boxers who previously fought for the RP crown, Ardine Diale controlled most of the action in his flyweight fight with Rodel Quilaton but failed to stop his opponent and had to contend himself with a unanimous decision victory (98-92, 100-90, 98-92). Rounding off the results of the other bouts: Jason Rotoni defeated Eljune Leonardo via a unanimous decision in their lacklustre 10-round minimum-weight bout (97-93, 96-94, 99-90); In a battle of first time 10-rounders, Ronnel “Tarver” Esparas defeated JP Ignacio via a unanimous decision in their super-feather bout (96-93, 96-93, and 95-94); Ronald Pontillas scored two knockdowns each in the first and second rounds leading to a 2nd round TKO win over Elmer Saligumba in their super-feather bout; In what could be regarded as the best fight of evening (which was aptly chosen as the best fight of the preliminaries), Marvin Alegria fought to a unanimous draw with Mark Mariano in a fight where the two protagonists virtually slugged it out for the entire 18 minutes of their 6-round super-feather fight (57-57 in all scorecards); Dennis Tubieron cruised to a unanimous decision victory over the hapless Arjet Caballes in their 6-round bantamweight bout (60-53 in all scorecards); First timer Jaymart Toyco emerged the winner over Mardi Zulita in their 4-round flyweight bout (40-36, 39-37, 39-37); and Joan Imperial scored a brilliant 3rd round TKO victory over the game Kosta Luzarito in their flyweight bout (scheduled for 4 rounds). The event was promoted by Dante S. Almario in cooperation with the Channel 4 TV program “In this Corner” whilst the matchmaking was handled by Gerry Garcia.
