MEPRANUM TO SEE ACTION IN PACQUIAO-COTTO UNDERCARD
By Edwin G. Espejo PhilBoxing.com Fri, 16 Oct 2009
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (October 16) – Reigning World Boxing Organization oriental flyweight king Richie Mepranum is again going to see action after almost a year of hiatus.
Mepranum, whose last fight was against American Cesar Lopez in December last year, has been slated to go against a still to be named opponent in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Cotto welterweight bout on November 14 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
His manager, Maasim Mayor Jojo Lopez, said Mepranum is in top shape and excellent physical condition despite the long layoff and will not disappoint Manny Pacquiao and Top Rank, who worked out the inclusion of the 22-year old boxer from Sarangani in the Las Vegas super fight.
In his fight against Lopez last year, Mepranum bucked cold weather and jet lag to fashion out a convincing unanimous decision against the wily veteran American boxer.
Mepranum, a lefty like Pacquiao, holds a respectable record of 21 wins, one loss and one draw. His only loss was a controversial decision in his first fight abroad, against Denkaosan Kaovichit of Thailand.
Richie said he dominated the world rated Thai boxer and almost knocked him out but he still ended up the loser.
In June 2006, Mepranum toyed with Tanzanian knockout artist Juma Fundi to capature the WBO oriental flyweight crown.
He also holds a win over reigning RP flyweight titleholder Rocky Fuentes.
Mepranum's fight next month will be his third time to be featured in the undercard of a Pacquiao fight.
Aside from seeing action when Pacquiao pummeled Oscar de la Hoya into surrender last year, Richie also fought at the Araneta Coliseum when the Filipino pound for pound boxing king won over Oscar Larios.
Mayor Lopez said Mepranum will leave earlier to acclimatize himself with the weather.
His manager said he hopes Mepranum will again display his big fighting heart and impress Las Vegas boxing fans like he did last year.
