Davey Browne’s Dad on his son's controversial win over Reynaldo Belandres: "WE WERE SURPRISED TOO!" PhilBoxing.com Mon, 12 Oct 2009 Sydney, Oct. 10 - In a dramatic display of humility and honesty, Davey Browne, Sr., trainer and father of the new World Boxing Council (WBC) Youth World Featherweight champion, Davey Jr., admitted to Australian boxing trainer Todd Makelin that he and his son were also surprised by the decision declaring the Australian fighter winner by a lopsided margin in the rugged 10-round fight against young Reynaldo Belandres of North Cotabato in the Philippines. Browne Sr. told Makelin in the spirit of sportsmanship and fairness, he was willing to let his son fight Belandres again in a rematch but this would have to wait until next year to allow Davey Jr.'s serious injuries to heal. Makelin, himself a former boxer who fought Manny Pacquiao in North Cotabato many years ago, said Browne Sr. admitted that the best result they were expecting was a draw. Makelin, whose mother is a Filipina, was in the corner of Belandres working as a cutman but is a close friend of Davey Browne, Sr. Browne Sr. told Makelin that he wanted to stop the fight after the 7th round because of the big cut over the right eye of Davey Jr. but the young Australian fighter insisted on continuing the fight. The cut needed 10 stitches to close after the fight. He further told Makelin that when the scores were being read by the ring announcer, he thought that the fight was given to Belandres because the best that he was expecting was a draw. The judge’s scores were: George Pellis 98-92, Kevin Hogan 97-95, and Will Soulos 97-94. Makelin added that Browne Sr. also expressed surprise at the 97-95 and 97-94 scores submitted by Hogan and Soulos because these indicated that they gave three rounds to Davey Browne Jr. with a score of 11-9, which cannot be done in a 10-point must scoring system where the winner of the round gets 10 while the loser gets 9. The fight for the vacant WBC Youth World title, staged at the Sports Theater of the Star City Casino and Hotel in downtown Sydney, started with Belandres, who stood at least 4 to 5 inches shorter than the 5' 11" tall Davey Jr., launching a relentless attack. In the second round, a Belandres left hook opened a cut over the right eye of Browne Jr. which continued to bleed prompting the doctor to check the wound after the 7th round. Bringing the fight to his taller opponent, Belandres hurt Browne Jr. several times during the 10-round bout but faded in the last two rounds. The decision declaring Browne Jr. winner by a wide margin was met protests by the Australian boxing fans. Bill Treacy, owner of Grange Old School Boxing which staged the championship bout, Garrie Francisco, CEO of Grange, and even American former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Mike McCallum who were at ringside all agreed with the crowd and said Belandres was robbed of the fight. "Your boy clearly won the fight," Treacy told North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pi?ol, owner of the Braveheart Boxing Club to which Belandres belongs. Treacy said he will stage the rematch should the WBC order it. Vice Gov. Pi?ol said he will write the Australian boxing commission to officially ask for an investigation into the behaviour of the judges assigned to the fight. |
