Grange Willing to Stage Browne-Belandres Rematch PhilBoxing.com Sat, 10 Oct 2009 Sydney, Oct. 9 - Australian boxing promotions company, Grange Old School Boxing, which staged the controversial World Boxing Council (WBC) World Youth Featherweight championship where a badly battered Australian Davey Browne won over Filipino Reynaldo Belandres last night, has said it is willing to stage a rematch if the WBC leadership would order it. "We would be more than willing to stage the rematch provided the WBC orders it," said Garrie Francisco, CEO of Grange during a meeting North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol this morning at the Star City Hotel and Casino, venue of last night's denounced 10-round bout between Browne and Belandres. Grange owner Bill Treacy (not Tracy as earlier reported) also told Vice Gov. Pinol that he believed that it was only fair and just that Belandres be given a rematch. "Everyone of us believes Reynaldo won that fight last night," Treacy said pointing to his other companions in the breakfast table who in turn expressed agreement with Treacy's statement. Todd Makelin, a former Australian boxer who fought Manny Pacquiao in North Cotabato many years ago, said he will communicate with WBC official Ted Walker and request for an immediate rematch. Makelin, who worked in Belandres' corner last night, was so outraged by the result that he confronted the Australian boxing officials after the fight. To cap the irony of the Browne-Belandres fight, the Australian came out of his dug out after the fight with a bandaged head while Belandres was virtually unscathed as he smiled and thanked the Australian boxing fans who congratulated him on the way out. "We were disappointed and disgusted by the result of the fight but the bigger victim here is Australian sports because the incident last night was an assault on the spirit of sportsmanship and fairness that Australians are known for," Vice Gov. Pinol told Bill Treacy. Treacy assured Vice Gov. Pinol that should the rematch push through, he would make sure that the judges would come from neutral areas to ensure that no more cheating would occur. |
