BELANDRES WANTS TO FIGHT 'BOOM BOOM'
PhilBoxing.com Fri, 18 Sep 2009
Kidapawan City - Undefeated featherweight Reynaldo "Boy of Steel" Belandres is being offered as a replacement for the injured Thai opponent of Cebu's Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista Oct. 16.
Braveheart Boxing Club (BBC) owner North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Pinol, who manages Belandres, said the 23-year-old college student from Dalapitan, Matalam, North Cotabato could prove to be a worthy opponent for Bautista who is on a comeback trail.
Belandres, 5' 5" tall, has a record of 12 wins (8 KOs) and two draws and is a former member of the Philippine amateur boxing team.
Vice Gov. Pinol, who is known to be a tough critic even of his own boxers, has described Belandres as "raw and rough on the edges and a bit tentative in his fighting style."
He, however, said that should a fight against Boom Boom Bautista materialize, it would be a good test to determine whether Belandres has the heart to take on big-name opponents.
Bautista's fight against the injured Thai is supposed to be for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Interim Featherweight International title.
Belandres is among the long list of outstanding fighters from Mindanao managed by the Braveheart Boxing Club which Vice Gov. Pinol co-owns with his 10 brothers.
The boxing club, established only in 2000 now has five regional champions: Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, WBO Oriental Miniflyweight Champion; Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, WBO Oriental Jr. Flyweight Champion; Rolando "Smooth Operator" Magbanua, WBO Interim Oriental Bantamweight Champion; Jundy "Pretty Boy" Maraon, WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion and Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, WBO Oriental Featherweight Champion.
