In Rusty’s Corner: Ringsports.com Writes 30 By Rusty Rubin PhilBoxing.com Wed, 26 Aug 2009 Sad to report yet another demise in the boxing world, the end (hopefully temporarily) of Ringsports.com. In it’s long existence (more than 20 years for both the website and magazine); we have strived to bring the best in boxing news and pictures to our readers. The decision was not based on income produced (or lack of) but rather the need for those posting the site to find better employment. To that end, I wish them well. As for the columns, mine will still be seen on some of the better sites, and if those in charge of these sites want to publish some of our writers, I’ll gladly put them in contact with them. As for the magazine and website, they both will go into limbo, until or unless the time comes when someone wishes to purchase them. Anyone interested can contact me directly at rustyrubin@sbcglobal.com. So as this part of my legacy to the sport I love ends, I’d like to thank everyone who made this past half century the best years of my life. Boxing people are special, family if you will. As for my legacy, I believe the most important thing I have done is help those in our sport by founding the “Glove2Glove” program. This free prayer group has helped improve and even save more than a few lives. Glove2Glove is a program I want to continue, long after I have left the sport. To that end, I thank Dave and Deborah Wilcox, who have offered to take over the program and promised to continue it indefinitely.*** The World Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on October 24th at the LAX Marriott. Further information will be passed along as it becomes available. Among those being inducted and expected to be on hand are ex-champion Brian Mitchell, Rafael Herrera, Orlando Canizales and popular long-time boxing commentator Al Bernstein. An event to look forward to, as always.*** Not a lot of upcoming boxing action to speak of so well make our picks on upcoming fights as they get closer. Glove 2 Glove: Prayers for the soul of Tracy Callis jr. and the other fine boxing folks who have left a void in our sport and our lives the past few months. It would take too long to list all the other fine boxing people who left us since my last article, so a prayer for all of them would be in order. May the good Lord have mercy on their souls. Prayers are asked for the return to health of boxing analyst Nick Charles who is in a Texas hospital suffering from bladder cancer. Nick is a fighter and he has some great folks in his corner. Prayers for the return to health are asked for boxing guy and friend Ed Milberger or Oregon, who, fairly quietly, has done much to improve the image of our sport. Alex Ramos, the Bronx Bomber and founder of the Retired Boxers Association, is having more health problems and needs our help, financial if possible but definitely our prayers. Ringsports.com’s photographer Ray Luna reports that his mother, Geneva has suffered a series of strokes. Please pray for her rapid recovery. Please pray for my Aussie mate John MacDougall, who had to admit his wife of many years to a nursing home. Both John and his wife Gwen need your prayers for recovery and inner strength. One of boxing’s good guys, Genaro ‘Chicanito’ Hernandez has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. The good news from his corner (and mine) is that his cancer is in remission. Prayers also for former World Boxing Hall of Fame President Charlie Casas who is having some severe health problems as well as one of the founders and past President, Dub Harris, who suffered a stroke. Prayers for Audrey Talmo, wife of solid boxing guy, Ed. Also prayers for the recovery of Mills Lane and Dennis Wilcox. Please say prayers for Phill Grazide of Santa Rosa, CA. a big supporter of amateur boxing, who is suffering the crippling effects of rheumatoid arthritis. Needless to say we need prayers for the return to health of former champ Gerald McClellan, who is confined to wheelchairs. On behalf of these great fighters who have given their all in our great sport, we thank you for your ongoing prayers. If you know of any boxing people in need of spiritual uplift or prayers, just drop us a line. It’s free to all and no one will ever contact you except for prayer requests, or put your name on anyone’s mailing list. To join drop me a line at Rusty@ringsports.com. Thanks and God bless. *** Rusty Rubin is managing editor of Ringsports.com. He is also the author of three acclaimed boxing books! “Woozel, Boxing and Me”, “Off the Canvas” and “Billy Soose, the Champion Time Forgot” co-authored by Tom Donelson. These books are available at Authorhouse.com, and all major book suppliers. Rubin is currently at work on two new books and asks those who inquired when the next one will be out, to be patient a bit longer. In these hard economic times, any or all of these books will make an excellent and inexpensive presents to the boxing fan(s) in your life. You will be glad you did! *** Rusty also wants to let everyone know that although the magazine Ringsports.com has been closed, the hope is that it will only be temporary and an investor will be found. Ringsports.com is not sending out any spam ads. I strongly advise everyone to ignore anything not expected. Please feel free to check with me if you have any questions. *** Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rusty Rubin. |
