Kenyan ?Virus? Targets Amonsot

PhilBoxing.com

Morris ?Virus? Chule of Kenya promised a good fight and an entertaining show in his upcoming battle against Bohol's Czar Amonsot this Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Chule got his ring name ?Virusi? or Virus in Swahili because he once fought a boxer whose ring name was ?Computer? and he beat him. He belongs to the Kamba tribe of Kenya. He once killed an elephant using a bow and arrow. This certainly spells bad news for Amonsot.

Team Chule said that considering that Amonsot has been knocked out before there is no reason why he will not be stopped again.

Amonsot has never fought an African boxer before and is making his second comeback fight since he lost his ring war against Michael Katsidis of Australia via a 12-round unanimous decision in a World Boxing Organization (WBO) interim lightweight title fight at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Post fight tests revealed a blood clot in his brain. The subdural hematoma was minimal and not life threatening. Nevada doctors, however, still decided to confine Amonsot at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a Las Vegas hospital for more precautionary tests. He was sidelined for one year and six months. Amonsot kept himself in shape and still wanted to box. He won his comeback fight last January with a smashing 5th round knockout win over Indonesia's Zoel Fidal.

Whether the Boholano southpaw's sledgehammer right hook can provide the needed antidote against the Kenyan promises to be a nail biting moment in the fight card billed as ?Tuloy ang Pagsubok.?

Chule won the Kenyan superfeatherweight title last year with a 9th round TKO win over Musa Njue in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. This is his first time to fight in the Philippines. His record is 11W-6L-2D with 8 KO's.

The press conference was held at the Patio Isabel in Talamban. Also in atendance was Mbwana Matumla of Tanzania who is AJ Banal's opponent and Indonesia?s welterweight titlist Hero Katili who will face Jason Pagara.

(Very special thanks to recently returned VSO Volunteer Rico Bastida for his assistance during the press conference. His Kiswahili has always been better than mine and makes for better interviews. He served as a VSO Bahaginan secure livelihoods volunteer in the Tanzanian mainland and the island of Zanzibar.) -- with Teodorico Bastida, Jr.
