MANNY A POSTER BOY

PhilBoxing.com

By this time, everybody who has something to say about Manny?s devastating knockout of Ricky Hatton has said so. There is another knockout that has not been given much focus ? Manny?s pitch for good manners and propriety.

In the run-up to the Battle of the East and West, Floyd Mayweather Sr. tried to bait Manny into losing his composure by taunting him and resorting to signature trash talk. Manny however did not only refuse to fall for the ruse; he in fact showed everybody how a gentleman reacts to such trash.

Manny never failed to respond with grace and composure. He did not dignify Mayweather Sr.?s pathetic attempts to belittle Manny. Mayweather Sr. in fact at times seemed to come across as a racist who had little respect for the Filipino. Even up to that point, Manny already deserved to be in the ring with Hatton because of his impressive credentials.

The result not only was a devastating knockout of Hatton inside the ring. That was obvious to everybody. There was however another knockout that Manny delivered: the knockout to trash talking and perverted mentality displayed by Mayweather Sr.

Manny showed the world that Filipinos know good manners and that they are fine gentlemen even when they are provoked like what Mayweather Sr. did. Indeed, are fighters supposed to throw their good manners out of the window just because they are mean machines inside the ring?

Manny showed what real toughness is. He fought according to the rules. He conducted himself in civility and dignity. And he respected both Hatton who was eager to punish him physically, and Mayweather Sr. who assaulted him verbally.

For whatever it is worth, many people were concerned that Hatton would resort to his dirty tricks. Manny however was well prepared for that. As a result, the fight was clean for the most part ? one thing that can only be credited to Manny.

Manny showed what real class is. Hopefully, with his devastating win over Hatton that cemented his hold on the distinction as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, Manny will usher in a new era of good manners and propriety in boxing.

Boxing deserves a much more admirable face than ill-mannered, trash-talking, dirty-playing and foul-mannered brutes. Thankfully for us, Manny fits the bill.

Make way for boxing?s new poster boy of appropriate behavior.
