ABA Fighters Continue to Shine! PhilBoxing.com Wed, 15 Apr 2009 Fighters from the American Boxing Academy (ABA) have continued their winning ways, the latest of which took place on March 28 in General Santos City. American Boxing Academy owner Ken Smith was not surprised when he heard all four of his fighters won their respective bouts, he was surprised however at the fashion in which they all won. "I was expecting tougher bouts for my guys frankly," Smith said. Starting the night off with ABA youngster Joebert Delos Reyes' 4th round TKO of Rene "Boy" Elcamel, the Digos City based stable got off to a fast start and hardly looked back. Delos Reyes the 19 year old youngster made easy work out of a tough and determined opponent in Elcamel. But, Delos Reyes showed signs of his inexperience even at times rushing his power punches and missing badly. Delos Reyes at 126lbs is now 4-0 3kos in his first year as a pro boxer. The only scare for ABA came in the Roberto Udtuhan vs Rosendo Navares fight scheduled for 6 rounds. Udtuhan 9-0 8Kos who easily outboxed and outpunched Navares in the first 2 rounds had to survive being knocked down in round 3. Udtuhan while continuing to control the action was blasted midway thru the 3rd round by a Navares solid hook to the side of Udtuhan's temple area, sending Udtuhan crumbling to the canvas. Udtuhan reached his feet at the count of 8 clearly hurt. To the unbeaten superfly's credit he survived the knock down and finished the round on his feet. Udtuhan came out for the next round determined to regain control, delivering acurate punches to Navares head and body turning the fight back around and causing Navares to surrender half way thru the round. The always crowd pleasing Ricardo 'JanJan" Claveria didnt disappoint any fans. Claveria ran his record to a perfect 9-0 6kos with an easy 2nd round TKO of local boy Jerold Tuyor. Claveria in his typical style forced the action from the opening bell with hard uppercuts on the inside, and a punishing jab that had the overwhelmed Tuyor looking for escape early. In round 2 Claveria had his opponent out by nailing him with unanswered blows forcing the 2nd round stoppage. Having what appearded to be the easiest fight of the night for American Boxing Academy was Pro Debuter Edwin Frial. Frial a former amatuer star from General Santos City, made short work of Andy Macarayan with an explosive showing of power and finesse in the very first round prompting the referee and the corner to ask for a halt to the assault. Frial 115 pounds and a obvious talent has just recently started working with ABA trainer Norman Wilson. Smith said "Norman is going to make Edwin a better fighter than he is now, the best he can be. I think even at this point Edwin can beat most flyweights in the world. In one year he will be a champion." |
