Catubay vs Sod for WBO Title in Thailand!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 06 Apr 2009
BANGKOK--SGG fighter Federico "Magnifico" Catubay will go out of his comfort zone both in weight and in geography as he takes on world-ranked Sod Looknongyangtoy in a 12-round battle for the the latter's WBO Asia Pacific superbantam title tomorrow here.
Both fighters came in at an exact 122 lbs during official weigh-in at the Bangpo Hospital here supervised by WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo.
Catubay is on a four-bout winning spree since his 12th-round defeat at the hands of unified superflyweight champ Vic Darchinyan.
"I am going to break Sod's game plan because I'm the Magnifico," Catubay told this writer yesterday prior to easily making weight, adding that he is so confident of winning the title he has asked promoter Kokiet Panachiyarom not to use any judges at all.
"No need for the judges. I will knock him out anyway," Catubay in his Darchinyanesque posturing stated. Looknongyangtoy (40-2, 18 KO's), who plans to vie yet again for the world title should he get past the stocky Catubay, is on a 13-bout winning rampage since his first-round defeat at the hands of Daniel Ponce de Leon.
"I cannot afford to lose tomorrow. I still have a world title dream," said Looknongyangtoy, adding that he plans to challenge the winner of the Juan Manuel Lopez-Gerry Penalosa showdown set in Puerto Rico on April 25.
Meanwhile, WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo informed that should the Thai fighter win today, he will indeed get a good chance at fighting the Lopez-Penalosa winner.
Panoncillo, who has also been given by the WBO hierarchy authority to lead the WBO African region due to his track record in nurturing the Asia Pacific, Oriental and Youth arms of the sanctioning body, was also quick to point out that Catubay is a tough customer, and should be a hindrance to Sod's title dreams.
