LEYTE AMATEUR BOXING TOURNAMENT UPDATE PhilBoxing.com Thu, 26 Mar 2009 KANANGA, Leyte -- Eight bouts ushered in the 1st Smart/ABAP Area Amateur Boxing tournament Monday that saw raw but young and promising talents battle each other out Monday night at the Kananga Municipal gym in this town. The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, headed by Manny V. Pangilinan and Ricky Vargas, supervised and organized the event that started with three divisions, the School Boys (37-38.5 Kgs), Junior Boys (38.5 - 40 Kgs) and Youth Boys (48 Kgs). Overseeing the Visayas elimination is ABAP executive director Ed Picson who traces his roots from nearby city Tacloban and the town of Hindang in Leyte. ?Very early in the tournament we see how our young boxers are very enthusiastic and promising,? Picson said. ?The support given by local government officials has been most encouraging in our campaign to create awareness about amateur boxing and our quest for excellence in the sport.? School Boys entry Velmark Dignos of Cebu City-A scored the upset of the night by wearing down lanky Cholem Alabado of the dreaded Bago City Team. Bago Team came back with a vengeance in the Junior Boys category as Rogen Ladon stopped Alenander Morales of Ormoc in the first round with a solid shot to the body. Anthony Sabalde of Cebu ended the campaign of Acbar Collao of Ormoc in the Youth Boys division with a 2nd round RSC- Outclassed. Sabalde?s stablemate Rodel Yap also scored a stoppage over Antonio Gutang of San Carlos City. Other results saw Jack Tepora of Cebu City (A) winning on points over Alil Ali of Cebu City (B); Iloilo?s Espiridion Pubadora outclassed Roel Berong of Bohol in the 3rd round; Niel Bryan Unay of Northern Samar tallied a 3rd round RSC-O over Bohol?s Pedro Balaba while another fighter from N. Samar Michael Duazo needed just one round to beat Jerald Casimiro of Ormoc. |
