PhilBoxing.com Thu, 26 Mar 2009
KANANGA, Leyte -- Eight bouts ushered in the 1st Smart/ABAP Area Amateur Boxing tournament Monday that saw raw but young and promising talents battle each other out Monday night at the Kananga Municipal gym in this town.
The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, headed by Manny V. Pangilinan and Ricky Vargas, supervised and organized the event that started with three divisions, the School Boys (37-38.5 Kgs), Junior Boys (38.5 - 40 Kgs) and Youth Boys (48 Kgs).
Overseeing the Visayas elimination is ABAP executive director Ed Picson who traces his roots from nearby city Tacloban and the town of Hindang in Leyte.
?Very early in the tournament we see how our young boxers are very enthusiastic and promising,? Picson said. ?The support given by local government officials has been most encouraging in our campaign to create awareness about amateur boxing and our quest for excellence in the sport.?
School Boys entry Velmark Dignos of Cebu City-A scored the upset of the night by wearing down lanky Cholem Alabado of the dreaded Bago City Team.
Bago Team came back with a vengeance in the Junior Boys category as Rogen Ladon stopped Alenander Morales of Ormoc in the first round with a solid shot to the body.
