Magboo in Big Win at San Pablo City Boxing

PhilBoxing.com

Nino Magboo of Yolly Alfante's Shock Punch Boxing Stable scored the biggest win of his career so far with an upset split decision victory over betting-favourite Ericson Origenes of the Marti Elorde Boxing Stable in their super-bantamweight main event of the ?Mano-Mano Enkwentro: Unang Dagundong sa San Pablo held last Saturday evening at the San Pablo City Central Stadium, San Pablo City.

The atmosphere at the venue was electrifying as the two fighters, known for their combative styles, fought it out fiercely in a give and take affair for the full ten rounds literally giving the paying audience their money's worth. Origenes was the usual stalker and appeared to trap Magboo in the ropes several times but the latter did well in covering up to launch his own counters. In this writer's observation, it was Magboo's crispier punches that led two of the judges to award him the win by the scores of 99-91 and 97-93, respectively. The third judge saw otherwise and scored it 99-92 in favor of Origenes. It was a career-boosting victory for Magboo who, before the fight, was encouraged by his handler, Ms. Yolly Alfante, to make good of his chances as the fight was a stepping stone for him and he did not dissapoint. We should expect more from this exciting fighter in the future.

The supporting main event bout held at junior-flyweight between Mating Kilakil of Elmer Anuran's Touch Gloves Boxing Gym (Agoncillo, Batangas) and Edwin Tumbaga of Brico Santig's Highland Boxing Stable (La Trinidad, Benguet) was a competitive fight with the Kilakil emerging the winner by a unanimous decision. (80-72, 77-75, and 78-74). Tumbaga had a good start scoring the heavier punches over his smaller opponent but Kilakil soon gained the upperhand as the rounds progressed.

The super-feather clash between Al Sabaupan (Touch Gloves) and veteran Dante Paulino (Charlie Sanchez Stable, Angeles City) was a strategical fight with both boxers displaying their boxing skills. In the end, Sabaupan outwitted his more experienced opponent by scoring a unanimous decision victory (80-72, 77-75, and 78-74).

In the super-bantamweight fight between Lloyd Francisco (Ariscon Boxing Stable, Muntinlupa City) and Marvin Batolina (Mones Stable, Valenzuela City), Francisco boxed flat-footed, albeit, beautifully, using his quick jab to keep Batolina at bay and oftentimes catching the latter with crisp uppercuts. Francisco also showed impressive defense by weaving and blocking most of Batolina' shots effectively giving the latter no chance to be in the fight. The fight was stopped at the end of the 6th (of the scheduled 8 rounds) to save Batolina from further punishment.

One of the most exciting fights of the evening was the junior flyweight fight involving women protagonists Jujeath Nagawa (Highland Boxing Stable) and Baina Londo (Camitan Boxing Stable). For six rounds, these two ladies produced a 12-minute non-stop action that one wonders where were they getting their energy. It was, however, Nagawa who was getting the better of the action oftentimes beating Londo to the punch, and went on to score a unanimous decision victory (58-56, 60-54, 60-54). The experience she gained of fighting abroad twice last year certainly benefited her in improving her performance.

Rounding off the results of the other fights:

Rodynie Rafols (Alarcon Stable) and Jojo Cuison (Highland) figured in a split draw in their 6-round bantamweight fight (58-54 for Rafols, 57-56 for Cuison, and 56-56);

Lolito Sonsona (Touch Gloves) defeated Ging Dacoliat (Shock Punch) via a UD (60-54 in all judges' scorecards) in their minimun-weight fight;

Mark Vito (Punch Out Boxing Stable) defeated Jayson Rotoni (Ariscon) via a MD (57-56, 57-56, and 57-57) in their flyweight bout with the point deducted against Rotoni from a cut above Vito's eye arising from an accidental headbutt providing the difference in an evenly contested bout;

Rodelio Cabello (Shock Punch) defeated Joseph Mansora (Empemano Boxing Stable) via a 3rd round TKO in another flyweight bout after his opponent was outboxing him for the most part of the bout;

Richard Vasquez (Pewee Vasquez Stable of Libon Albay) defeated Jelmar Escora (Empemano) via a 2nd round TKO after Escora who had success in the initial round by almost stopping his opponent, was trapped in a corner and absorbed numerous unanswered punches to the head prompting the referee to stop the fight in 57 seconds of the 2nd round of their super-flyweight bout; and

Menard Zaragoza (Shock Punch) using his distinct advantage as a southpaw repeatedly scored with huge left on Ricky Cabantingan (Empemano) before stopping the latter in 1:18 of the 4th and final round of their bantamweight fight.

The event was promoted by Ernie Empemano and television coverage was obtained by the Save by the Bell Boxing Promotions. Rudy Perez was the matchmaker.
