Shock Punch Boxers Victorious in Sucat Boxing

PhilBoxing.com

The Shock Punch boxers of boxing promoter and manager Yolly Alfante came out successful last night as all but one of them won their bouts against their respective opponents even the more impressive that the last three ended in TKOs. The event dubbed ?Bakbakan sa Sucat-1st Chairman Rene So Cup? was presented by Ms. Yolly Alfante and Dante Almario in cooperation with Kap. Rene So and Barangay Council and was held at the Sucat Sports Complex, Sucat, Muntinlupa City.

Highlighting the success was the 3rd round TKO win by Elpher Paganpan over journeyman Noel Sungahid in their main event super-bantamweight bout. Abandoning his usual methodical way of boxing, Paganpan elected to go after Sungahid dishing out one bomb after another which for a time Sungahid was able to withstand even though the latter was decked in the opening round. Sungahid was actually having his own way scoring nice and clean counters off the chin of the unrushing Paganpan and delighting the crowd in the process. Paganpan was relentless with his assault however and once again came up with another combination of powerful shots which to the observation of the audience Sungahid took them well. Hence, it came as a surprise when Sungahid, looking at his corner and shaking his head, suddenly quit, prompting Referee Silvestre Abainza to declare a TKO win for Paganpan at 0.54 of the 3rd round (scheduled for 10).

In the supporting main event held at the minimum-weight limit, Pit Anacaya, who was absent from local boxing for more than a year, dispelled any ill effects of such inactivity when he scored a 5th round knock-out over an off-timing Gerald Garcia, who appears to be the more rusty of the two. A left semi-uppercut to the midsection had Garcia down and grimacing in pain and it was immediately apparent that he would not be getting up. The good-looking referee in Sammy Bernabe declared Anacaya the winner by a KO victory when Garcia failed to get up for the count. The time was 2:43 of the fifth round (scheduled for ten). Anacaya also scored a knockdown in the previous round when a right upper landed flushed to the chin of Garcia but whose trip to the canvas was probably aided by a slippery floor right in his own corner.

The most explosive fight of the evening was the super bantam-weight bout between Nino Magboo and Nelson Sungahid. After a cautious start, Magboo pursued Sungahid and scored some hard shots to the head. Magboo was credited with a knockdown when his opponent hit the floor in what appeared to be a push. There were some anxious moments in the round when Sungahid was cut over his left eye from a headbutt but fortunately the fight was allowed to continue even though Magboo was deducted a point for it. The second round was another brawl until each fighter's strong right hook landed squarely to the opponent's chin. While Magboo was staggered from his opponent's shot, Sungahid was dropped like a sack of potatoes landing on the ropes in his own corner. Referee Abainza initially instructed Magboo to proceed to the neutral corner but after taking a few seconds look on the downed Sungahid, he ruled that the latter was in no position to continue making Magboo the winner via a TKO. The time was 0.57 of the second round (in a fight scheduled for six rounds).

Rounding off the results of the other fights:

Comebacking Prell Tupaz defeated Edison ?Kamatis? Berwela via a SD in their 6-round super-flyweight bout (59-54, 59-55 for Tupaz and 58-55 for Berwela);

Dayen Gabutan and Esmalben Bujas figured in a split draw in another super-flyweight 6-rounder (58-57 Gabutan, 58-56 Bjuas, and 57-57); and

Benjie Bartolome winning over Leo de Guia via a UD in their 4-round minimum-weight bout (39-36, 40-36, and 38-37).
