LAPUT, LUMACAD IN BIG WBO BOUTS TODAY By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 Oct 2008 NAGA CITY--Two top Filipino prospects vie for important regional titles here in the main event of the "Saga in Naga" card tonight at the Naga Sports Complex presented by SGG Promotions and Mayor Valdimar Chiong and the city council. "We are proud to present the biggest boxing event in the history of Naga. This is something we are very proud of," said promoter Sammy Gello-ani at yesterday's weigh-in. Headlining the cast is American Boxing Academy (ABA) fighter Ramie Laput (31-3, 15 KO's), who will vie for the interim WBO Asia Pacific superbantam title against Thailand's Mongkolchai Singmanassak (21-11, 8 KO's) in a 12-round encounter. Laput, a native of Compostela Valley, came in at a very trim 121 lbs during official weigh-in yesterday supervised by WBO Asia Pacific Chairman Leon Panoncillo and GAB's Rolando Mendoza, while Singmanassak had to shed off extra poundage before making the weight limit. Co-headlining the show is another ABA fighter Fernando Lumacad (17-1, 7 KO's), who will take on Thailand's Saensaknoi Or Muangklang (10-3, 2 KO's) for the interim WBO Oriental flyweight crown. The General Santos City-raised Lumacad checked in at a very fit 110 lbs, while Saensaknoi initially was a pound over, but made the 112-lb limit just in time. "If these boys hurdle their tough Thai opponents, there's a possibility that their next fights will be in the US, as their manager Ken Smith is bent on bringing them there," said WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo. Another young Filipino fighter, "Marvelous" Marvin Sonsona takes on compatriot Joel Rafols for the vacant WBO Youth flyweight crown over ten rounds.
