FORMER WBC CHAMP JOVY CHAN: I?M THE REAL McCOY

PhilBoxing.com

LAS VEGAS, Nevada ? ?I am proud of my past and my present job.?

Thus, remarked Jovy Chan-Halog, who claimed ?he is not ashamed? of his new job in both the Team Pacquiao and Team Concepcion despite his former status as titleholder of the World Boxing Council (WBC) international bantamweight belt.

?Tapos na sa akin ang boksing. Tumutulong na lang ako sa aking mga kasamahan sa abot nang aking makakaya (I?m have already retired in boxing. I am now helping my colleagues to the best of my ability),? said the 33-year-old Halog, who plummeted into stardom when he knocked out Theo Modise in the opening round of a 12-round title fight to capture the WBC international diadem in St. Juery, France on Nov. 27, 1999.

He currently works for Pacquiao, a fellow native of Mindanao in the Philippines, who tasked him to take care of North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super bantamweight champion Bernabe ?Kamaong Llave? Concepcion who fights Adam Carrera for 10 rounds at the MGM Grand here on July 26.

He drives Concepcion to the Wild Card gym in Hollywood, among other places, during Concepcion?s training. He also prepares Concepcion?s food and drinks and does errands for the NABF champion who considers him as brother, in return.

Halog said it is true that he is the same ?Jovy Chan? (his ring name minus Halog) who travelled to France together with his former manager Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde Jr. to face Modise. ?May kasama pa nga kaming Ilonggo na natalo sa main event (an Ilonggo boxer who was with us lost in the main event),? Halog narrated.

Halog clarified the matter after being informed that a reader questioned his credentials as a former WBC international champion. The reader also chided the journalist in an ?advisory? who wrote about Halog?s past accusing him of ?misinforming the public.?

?Sabihin mo witness pa si Don King. Nandoon siya sa France noong nanalo ako (Don King was a witness of my win because he was there in France when I fought),? Halog said.

Halog also explained that he should not be mistaken for his brother Junver Halog, who lost to Joel Avila for WBC international super flyweight title by split decision in San Fernando, Pampanga in the Philippines on Dec. 22, 2001.

?Junver is my brother and he is now in Germany,? he added. ?Maraming hindi nakakaalam na former WBC international champion ako dahil hindi ako madaldal eh. Hindi ko ipinagsasabi kung sino ako.?
