IS CONCEPCION READY FOR WBC CHAMPION VASQUEZ? By Alex P. Vidal PhilBoxing.com Tue, 15 Jul 2008 LOS ANGELES, CA ? If Bernabe Concepcion will beat Adam Carrera convincingly on July 26 in a 10-round non-title tiff in Las Vegas, this will bring him nearer the radar of World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Israel Vasquez of Mexico since he is currently rated No. 5, said WBC ring physician Dr. Allan L. Recto. ?The number one contender is Rafael Marquez also of Mexico and No. 2 is Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan; No. 3 is Naphapol Kiattisakchocchoi of Thailand and No. 4 is Jhonny Gonzalez also of Mexico. That means that a world title shot for Concepcion is not far-fetched if he beat Carrera convincingly,? said the Texas-based Recto. Concepcion (25-1-1, 14 KOs) will face Carrera (19-3, 8 KOs) in the undercard of the Miguel Cotto versus Antonio Margarito 12-round world welterweight championship at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He is currently training under the tutelage of famed trainer Freddie Roach and Alex Ariza at the Wild Card Gym here and his appointment with Carrera could be his stepping stone to a world title championship next year although his handlers led by Aljoe Jaro and WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao are not rushing him up, observed Recto, who will join Team Concepcion as cut man. Recto said he believed that Concepcion is ripe for the world title fight. ?Some of those previously unheard of became world champions because they were given the chance to fight for the world title,? Recto said. He said if a boxer is destined to become world champion, he will shine if the opportunity to fight for the world championship beckons. Recto said Concepcion?s future is being carefully charted by experts like Michael Koncz, Jaro and Pacquiao, who also supports the 20-year-old banger from Binangonan, Rizal morally and financially. ?Concepcion is also being well taken care of by world class trainers like Freddie Roach and Alex Ariza. He is indeed very lucky,? Recto averred. The 30-year-old Vasquez (43-,4, 31 KOs) is known to Pacquiao personally and has scored a 10th round technical knockout (TKO) win over former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez and Rafael Marquez who was clobbered twice in their trilogy.
