MAJOR SHOWS:

NOVEMBER 8

FORT WORTH , TX, USA: SUPER WELTER: VERGIL ORTIZ (24-0) W TKO 2 ERICKSON LUBIN (27-3). SUPER MIDDLE : DARIUS FULGHUM (14-1-1) DREW 10 DAVID STEVENS (15-1-1). MIDDLE: AMARY JONES (15-0) W TKO 3 SHADY GAMHOUR (14-3). HEAVY: JOSHUA EDWARDS (5-0) W TKO 3 ZENO VOORIS (5-2). MIDDLE ERIC PRIEST (16-0-1) DREW 8 ESNEIKER CORREA (16-6-3). CRUISER: ROBIN SAFAR (19-0) W PTS 10 DERICK MILLER Jr (18-1,1ND).

Ortiz vs. Lubin
ORTIZ overwhelms LUBIN in two rounds. Both were probing with their jabs with Ortiz on the front foot. Lubin was throwing plenty of jabs but was just probing and not committing himself. Ortiz moved in and with Lubin against the ropes landed a couple of left hooks to the body. Lubin continued on the back foot and landed a quick left counter. Ortiz backed Lubin to a corner and connected with two rights. In the second Ortiz was coming forward behind his jab looking to follow through with rights. He pinned Lubin against the ropes and fired hooks to head and body. Lubin was just hiding behind his guard as Ortiz landed with overhand rights to the heads and hooks to the body. As Ortiz continued to connect with clubbing punches Lubin fell apart and was out on his feet when the referee came in to save Lubin. Ortiz was making the second defence of the WBC interim title. He now has 22 wins by KO/TKO. Ortiz and Jaron Ennis faced up to each other after the
fight and that would be a great match. Lubin was disappointing. He hardly landed a punch and just collapsed under the first attack Ortiz launched

Fulghum vs. Stevens
FULGHUM and STEVENS fight to a majority draw that disappoints both fighters and the crowd. It was an ugly untidy fight. Fulghum looked to have edged a close first round but already there were indications this was going to be a messy fight with plenty of clinches. With so little clean action it was a fight that was difficult to score and Fulghum’s jab and longer reach was giving him the edge over the first three rounds. Stevens was getting past Fulghum’s jab in the fourth and landing well to the body but a punch from Fulghum knocked out his mouthguard in the fifth. The rounds were still close and there was still too much holding making for a restive crowd. Stevens had a good sixth getting inside to work but Fulghum made some space and had his jab working well in the seventh. The fight swung back to Stevens in the eighth as he piled forward past Fulghum’s jab landing to head and body. It looked to be anybody’s fight going into the ninth but if the crowd were hoping for some fireworks they were disappointed as again there was little clear action and lots of clinches. Both rounds were close with Stevens doing the better work in the ninth and Fulghum in the tenth with the crowd booing both fighters. Scores 95-95 twice and 96-94 for Fulghum. Texan Fulghum was coming off a very close loss against WBA No 2 Bektemir Melikuziev in May and was looking to spring back with a victory here. Stevens had lost to Melikuziev in November and he was looking to build on that so neither fighter achieved their aim.

Jones vs. Gamhour
JONES scores two knockdowns in the second to finish GAMHOUR. Jones took a low key first round boxing on the outside and connecting with a left hook late in the round. Jones was switching guards and doing what scoring there was but Swede Gamhour was showing some neat defensive moves to frustrate Jones. Two body shots and an overhand right sent Gamhour down in the second. He was up at eight but a left to the body and two rights saw him slide to the canvas and the fight was stopped. This was intended to test Jones over ten rounds but instead he racked up inside the distance win No 13. In the vested ranks Joines won a silver medal at the World Championships and bronze in Paris last year. Gamhour did not have the power or skill to threaten Jones.
Edwards vs. Vooris
EDWARDS halts a badly overmatched VOORIS in the third. This was too easy for the 6’3” Edwards who had reach, height and ability to spare over an overweight slow and technically limited Vooris. Edwards was able to pierce the high guard of Vooris with jabs, hooks and uppercuts. It was target practice . Vooris was cut over the righty eye and survived two doctors inspection in the second round with a cut over his left eye also showing by the end of the round. Edwards just kept landing punches at will in the third until the referee had seen enough and stopped the fight. All five of the Olympian’s wins have come inside the distance and he has had less than nine rounds of ring time. Second inside the distance loss for Vooris.
Priest vs. Correa
In a disappointing fight PRIEST remains unbeaten with split draw against CORREA. Priest put Correa under pressure in the first but Correa was more active and evened things up by taking the second. The single bit of drama came in the third as Priest connected with a right to the head that had Correa badly shaken. Correa recovered and they traded punches in a good fourth. Correra was more effective in the exchanges in the fifth but there really were few exchanges. There was very little to get excited about over the last three rounds. Priest was coming forward but Correa fought a defensive fight and Priest was unable to land anything of consequence. Priest did enough to collar the seventh but Correa boxed on the outside and did enough to edge the last. Priest looked to have just done enough to win but it was scored 79-73 Priest, 77-75 Correa and 76-76. Priest had promised promoter Oscar De La Hoya he would “steal the show” but this performance did not live up to that boast. Priest has scored wins over decent level opposition in Tyler Howard and Luis Arias so perhaps this was just a bad night for Priest. Venezuelan Correa had won only one of his last six fights so should not have tested Priest to the extent he did.
Safar vs. Miller
Swede SAFAR wins a meeting of unbeaten fighters as he takes a wide unanimous decision over MILLER. Safar was letting his hands go early probably also looking to impress De La Hoya. Miller boxed well and was competitive in the first but Safar landed the harder punches. He ruined his good work in the second. He looked on the way to winning the round but stupidly lost a point for a weak attempt to head butt Miller. Safar was again firing heavy punches in the third and staggered Miller with a right. Sawar was in control and Miller, although fighting back, was taking steady punishment and Safar knocked Miller’s mouthguard out with a right in the sixth. Miller was showing plenty of heart and a solid chin but was being worn down and looked exhausted in the seventh as Safar continued to land heavily. Miller staged a slight recovery in the eighth but Safar seemed to be content to dominate without going for as stoppage although he shook Miller late in the tenth. Safar won on scores of 99-90 twice and 98-91. Safar, the WBO No 5, is hoping to land a shot at WBO champion Gilberto Ramiez when Ramirez returns after injury. Miller showed guts but although he was unbeaten Safar was a huge leap in quality of opposition for him.

NOVEMBER 7

LAKELAND , FL, USA: WELTER: DELANTE JOHNSON (17-0) W TKO 4 NICKLAUS FLAZ (15-3). BANTAM: KATSUMA AKITSUGI (14-0) W TKO 7 VICENTE ASTROLABIO (20-6). LIGHT:
DOMINIC VALLE (12-0) W PTS 8 RENE ALVARADO (36-16).

Johnson vs. Flaz
JOHNSON destroys FLAZ in four rounds. Johnson made a sharp start working well with his jab in the first and having quicker hands. Faz worked to the body to make it a close round but it was Johnson’s round. Johnson also had the better of the exchanges in the second again working behind his jab and landing some hard counters with Flaz getting close and again landing some useful body shots. Flaz upped his pace in the third and was having a good round until Johnson landed a left hook that shook him and a huge right that sent Flaz down heavily. He beat the count and made it to the bell but was badly shaken. Johnson ended it in the fourth connecting with a right to the head that dropped Flaz. He struggled to his feet but his legs were gone and the fight was stopped. An impressive performance from Olympian Johnson against a valid test and he collected the vacant NABO title. Puerto Rican Flaz had won his last six fights.
Akitsugi vs. Astrolabio
US-based southpaw AKITSUGI floors Filipino ASTROLABIO three times in winning on a seventh round stoppage. Akitsugi took the initiative from the start. He was firing southpaw jabs and lefts to the body with the shorter Astrolabe on the back foot. He continued to be in charge in the second. He connected with a left to the body that hurt Astrolabio and then a couple of seconds later another saw Astrolabio back away and drop to a knee. He was up at eight and fought back to the bell. Akitsugi controlled the action in the third again with southpaw jabs. Astrolabio launched a fierce attack in the fourth but a series of shots to head and body saw him drop to his knees. A big effort from Astrolabio in the fifth saw a close round but a left to the body floored Astrolabio in the sixth. Akitsugi landed more body shots and Astrolabio looked a beaten fighter. A clash of heads had given Akitsugi a cut over his right eye and Astrolabio had swelling on both cheeks. Akitsugi took his foot off the peddle in the seventh until late in the round when a left to the body sent Astrolabio down for the third time and the referee immedicably stopped the fight. Third win in a row over reasonable level opposition for Akitsugi. Astrolabio hit his peak when beating both Guillermo Rigondeaux and 23-2-1 Nikolai Potapov but lost a majority decision to Jason Moloney in a fight for the vacant WBO bantam title in 2023. He was knocked out by Junto Nakatani for the WBC title in July last year.
Valle vs. Alvarado
A big gamble comes off as inexperienced VALLE wins a unanimous decision over former WBA super featherweight champion ALVARADO. The relatively inexperienced Valle showed unexpected talent as he used his 4” in height and longer reach to outbox Alvarado. He had to fight hard in every round as. Alvarado applied solid pressure from first to last but Valle did not crumble and won on scores of 80-72 twice and 79-73. Alvarado constituted a huge jump in level of opponent for Valle.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ, USA. HEAVY: OTTO WALLIN (28-3) W KO 2 CHRIS THOMAS (15-3-2). SUPER WELTER: JUSTIN FUGUEROA (14-0) W RTD 4 JOSE PERDOMO (9-8).
Wallin vs. Thomas
WALLIN scores a farcical kayo over THOMAS. Wallin used his longer reach to prod Thomas with right jabs. Thomas was just lunging inside and holding whilst Wallin struggled to land any clean hits. The farce ended in the second as Thomas collapsed to the canvas from two left hooks with the second one missing Thomas completely and he stayed down until he was counted out. First fight for Wallin since loss against Derek Chisora in an IBF eliminator in February. Thomas was pathetic.
Figueroa vs. Perdomo
FIGUEROA gets another inside the distance win as PERDOMO does not come out for the fifth round. This fight was almost as bad as the Wallin one. Figuero spent the whole fight tracking the constantly retreating Perdomo. Figueroa just could not pin Perdomo down and Perdomo only stopped occasionally to throw a few jabs. Figuero finally sent Perdomo staggering into a corner with a left hook and then threw a right and Perdomo tumbled to the floor. He got up just as the bell rung and promptly retired in his corner. Eleventh inside the distance win for local hope Figuero. Uruguayan Perdomo had somehow won his last three fights.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: SUPER WELTER: QAMIL BALLA (17-2-1) W PTS SERGEI VOROBEV (21-4-2). SUPER FLY: MAI SOLIMAN (10-1) W TKO 7 JASMINE PARR (8-2). FEATHER: MARIAH TURNER (12-1) W PTS 10 STEPHANIE CUTTING(9-1) .

BALLA, 36, gets an important win as he decisions Russian-born Australian VOROBEV. Balla won the unanimous decision on scores of 77-75 twice and 78-74. Balla’s two losses have come against George Kambosos and Jin Saski. Vorobev is 2-3-2 in his 7 fights since leaving Russia
Soliman V. Parr
SOLIMAN comes from a long way behind to halt PARR and win the vacant IBF International title. Parr had built a commanding lead winning the first six rounds on two cards and five on the third. Soliman had been pressing but outboxed. She finally broke through in the seventh driving Parr to the ropes and down. Parr made it to her feet but Soliman jumped on her unleashing an onslaught of punches until the referee came in and stopped the fight. Egyptian-born Soliman has won her last 9 fights 6 by KO/TKO. Parr’s only other loss was on points against more experienced former Commonwealth bantam champion Shannon O’Connell in December
Turner vs. Cutting
TURNER makes it 7 wins in a row as she outpoints fellow-Australian CUTTING. Turner, the Australian champion, won on scores 99-91, 98-92 and 96-94. She picks-up the vacant IBF International title. Cutting is a former undefeated Australian featherweight champion.

BOLOGNA, ITALY: LIGHT: PAMELA NOUTCHO SAWA (10-0) W PTS 10 KAREN CARABAJAL (25-3). FEATHER: GHAITH WESLATI (12-0) W TKO 4 NICOLO SETARO (9-3).
Noutcho vs. Carbajal
Italian-based NOUTCHO wins the vacant IBO title with a split decision over Argentinian CARBAJAL. Noutcho started by attacking and setting a fast pace forcing Carbajal to the ropes and firing punches. In each round Carbajal came back with a strong finish. Realising that Carbajal was not going to be a push over Noutcho dialled back her aggression and Carbajal stepped up her attacks making the fight close. Carbajal looked to have taken the sixth and in the seventh as an off balance Noutcho partially turned her back Carbajal landed a punch that sent Natchoo down. Noutcho came back from that to win the eighth and ninth but Carbajal had the edge in the last so it was very close. Noutcho won on scores of 97-92 and 95-94 and 95-94 for Carbajal. Third title for former European and Italian champion Noutcho. Carbajal looked a little unlucky not to get at least a draw. Her other two losses have been in big fights against Katie Taylor and Rhiannon Dixon
Weslati vs. Setaro
After a couple of fairly even rounds WESLATI felled SETARO late in the third. Setaro beat the count and was saved by the bell. When a left hook floored Setaro in the fourth the referee stopped the fight. Italian-based Tunisian Weslati wins the vacant Italian title with his third victory by KO/TKO. Setaro was coming off four wins.

MANAGUA, NICARAGUA: LIGHT: FRANCISCO FONSECA (38-4-2) W TKO 7 ERICK ENCINIA (21-11-1). LIGHT: YADER CENTENO (9-0) W TKO 7 KELING FONSECA (8-9).

Fonseca vs. Encina
FONSECA stops former victim Mexican ENCINIA in the seventh. Fonseca put Encinia under steady pressure in the first but Encinia had a much better second round. From there it was Fonseca’s fight and he wore down Encinia with relentless attacks. Encinia fought back hard but was hampered by a bad cut over his right eye from a punch and despite protests from Encinia the fight was stopped in the seventh. Nicaraguan-born Costa Rican Fonseca was defending the WBA Gold title. He had outpointed Encinia over eight rounds in April. He lost to Tevin Farmer for the IBF super feather in 2018 and was knocked out in 90 seconds by Ryan Garcia in 2020 but he was coming off a points win over unbeaten French star Sofiane Oumiha in August
Centeno vs. Fonseca
CENTENO made it a double for Costa Rica as he scored a seventh round win over local fighter FONSECA. Centeno, 25, makes it 8 inside the distance wins. Third defeat in a row for Fonseca.

TORRELODONES, SPAIN: FEATHER: ALBA SANCHEZ (9-3) W PTS 10 SARAI UMPIERREZ (3-4). SUPER MIDDLE: DAMIAN BIACHO (20-1) W TKO 4 JOSE MENESES (6-2).
Sanchez vs. Umpierrez
SANCHEZ successfully defends her Spanish title with a wide unanimous verdict over UMPIERREZ. Sanchez had lost 3 of her last 4 fights but she was able to outbox the limited Umpierrez and won on scores of 100-90, 99-91, and 98-92. This was Sanchez’s first title defence and third loss in a row for Umpierrez.
Biacho vs. Meneses
Easy night for talented BIACHO as he beats Colombian MENESES in four rounds. He put Meneses down three times, once in the third and twice in the fourth to force the stoppage. Biachio’s loss came on points against unbeaten Dane Jacob Bank for the WBO Global belt in March.

NOVEMBER 8

MILAN, ITALY: MIDDLE: DAVID MORELLO (26-1) W PTS 10 FATON VUKSHINAJ (17-2-2). SUPER FEATHER: FRANCESCO PAPARO (12-1-1) W PTS 10 CATALIN IONESCU (16-5-1). LIGHT HEAVY: MOHAMED ELMAGHRABY (13-0) W TKO 3 DAVIDE De LELLIS (11-4-3). CRUISER: JONATHAN KOGASSO (18-0) W PTS 10 BRANDON DESLAURIER (19-6-1,1ND).
Morello vs. Vukshinaj
MORELLO wins a very tight unanimous decision over VUKSHINAJ. Morello started off boxing cleverly and connecting with some useful right hooks. Vukshinaj increased his pace putting Morell under pressure pinning him against the ropes firing combinations to move ahead. In the fifth a hook from Vukshinaj floored Morello. There was controversy as the punch looked to have landed to the back of Morello’s head. Vukshinaj built on the incident and had the better of the action in the seventh. With the knockdown and Vukshinaj taking the points in the sixth and seventh the Swiss fighter looked to have a solid lead. Morello dragged himself back into the fight as he went onto the attack forcing Vukshinaj onto the back foot and eating into Vukshinaj’s lead. It was anyone’s fight with two rounds to go and Morello’s finish impressed the judges most. Scores 114-113 twice and 115-112 for Morello who collects the vacant European Silver title and gets his eleventh win in a row. Vukshinaj looked worth a draw. Vukshinaj’s other loss was against unbeaten Etinosa Oliha in a challenge for the IBO middle title.
Paparo vs. Ionescu
PAPARO wins a technical decision over IONESCU. Paparo’s better skills and accuracy gave him the edge and already in the first round a punch had opened a cut over Ionescu’s right eye. Ionescu kept trying to put Paparo under pressure but was leaving himself open and was dropped by a combination in the third. To add to Ionescu’s problems he was cut over the left eye by a punch in the fourth. The pace dropped but Paparo floored Ionescu in the sixth and then the referee called the ringside doctor to examine Ionerscu’s cuts and the fight was stopped. It went to the cards and all three judges had it 59-54 for Paparo. Classy display from Paparo who was defending the Italian title for the third time. Romanian-born Ionescu is 3-3 in his last 6 outings.
Elmaghraby vs. De Lellis
Locally based Egyptian ELMAGHRABY wins the vacant Italian title with a third round victory over DE LELLIS. In the first De Lellis came flying out of his corner trying to overwhelm Elmaghraby with a wild attack. Elmaghraby stopped him in his tracks with a right hook. De Lellis lunged in again and a clash of heads saw him cut over his left eye. De Lellis continued his attacks over the second without much success. As he again came forward in the third Elmaghraby met him with a right that sent DeLellis down hard. He managed to get to his feet but the referee stopped the fight. Sixth win by KO/TKO and his second title win this year for Elmaghraby having won the vacant IBF Mediterranean belt in March. First inside the distance defeat for De Lellis who had won the IBO Mediterranean title in April.
Kogasso vs. Deslaurier
Congolese boxer KOGASSO keeps his 100-% record with a decision over France’s DESLAURIER. The 6’3” Kogasso had a seven inch height advantage and that was too much for the light punching Deslaurier to overcome. No scores available. Kogasso is the Italian cruiser champion.

TOOWOOMBA, AUSTRALIA: WELTER: JACKSON GRIFFITHS (19-0) W KO 3 DEFRY PALULU (25-7-2).
GRIFFITHS puts on a show for his fans as he beats Indonesian PALULU in the third. Griffith had dominated the action and he provided a fine finish. A seven-punch combination featuring left hooks to the body and straight rights put Palulu down and out. Tenth win by KO/TKO for Griffiths who showed impressive power. Southpaw Palulu has now lost his last five fights four inside the distance.

CHERBOURG, FRANCE: WELTER: HUGO MOREL (13-0) W PTS 10 NAIM BELLAHCENE (7-6-2). CRUISER: FAYCAL KARKOUR (9-4) W PTS 10 SOFIANE QUOIT (8-5-2) . HEAVY: MATTAR GARCIA (9-0) W PTS 10 CLEMENT GILLET ( 8-3-1).
Morel vs. Bellahcene
MOREL , 25, makes a successful first defence of the national title as he outpoints BELLAHCENE. Morel had won the vacant title with a second round stoppage of Cedrick Peynaud but he had to the full ten rounds this time winning on scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93. Morel is now looking to try for a shot at the European Silver belt. Bellahcene was 6-1-1 in his last 8 bouts.
Karkour vs. Quoit
KARKOUR wins the vacant French title with a unanimous decision over QUOIT. Scores 97-93 twice and 96-95. Karkour had improved his record winning 6 of his last 7 contests before this title fight. Quoit had also been a bit more successfully recently with just 2 losses in his last 9 fights.
Garcia vs. Gillet
GARCIA, 36, retains the French title as he gets a wide unanimous decision over GILLET. Scores 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92. Having won the title in May Garcia has now made two defences and has indicated he will relinquish the title and aim for a shot at the European belt. Gillet was having his second shot at winning the national title. He competed unsuccessfully in the WBC Grand Prix in April.

OSIMO, ITALY: SUPER LIGHT: CHARLEMAGNE METONYEKPON (17-2) W PTS 10 JOSE RIVAS (12-2).
“Charly” METONYEKPON gets off the floor to earn a close unanimous victory over Venezuelan RIVAS. Metonyekpon was giving away quite a bit of reach so from the beginning so was trying to work his way inside. He had some success in the first but walked onto a counter in the second and found himself on the floor. He was up quickly and took the fight to Rivas. The tactics were set with Rivas looking to box at distance and Metonyekpon driving forward looking to work to the body of Rivas and slow him. The rounds were close and Metonyekpon slowly ate into the gap from the 10-8 second round. The deciding factor was a storming finish from Metonyekpon which was just enough to get him the verdict. Scorers 96-93, 95-93 and 95-94. Benin-born Metonyekpon might have found it tough to keep his focus as his sister passed away last week. His losses have come in tough fights against Walid Ouizza ( a majority decision) and Armando Casamonica( a split decision). Rivas had been kayoed by unbeaten Olympic bronze medal winner Hovhannes Bachkov in March but had rebounded with two wins.

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA: SUPER MIDDLE: PAULINUS NDJOLONIMU (20-1) W KO 10 SNAMISO NTULI (9-6-1,1ND). FEATHER: MATEUS HEITA (15-1) W KO 4 ALIOU LOKO (12-2-1).
Ndjolonimu vs. Ntuli
NDJOLONIMUS scores a late stoppage over South African NTULI. Ndjolonimus was looking to blow away Ntuli from the start but Ntuli withstood the pressure and gradually worked his way into the fight. Eventually the Namibian’s power began to wear down Ntuli and a punch sent Ntuli’s mouthguard flying in the ninth. Ndjolonimus ended by flooring Ntuli again early in the tenth. Ndjolonimus 38, was defending the WBO African title and now has 18 wins by KO/TKO. Former South African middleweight title challenger Ntuli had won his last 3 fights.
Heitavs. Loko
Namibian HEITA picks up the vacant WBO African title with a fourth round kayo of Benins’ LOKO. Heita floored Loko in he second and again in the fourth with Loko counted out. First fight for Neita since losing a wide unanimous decision against Bruce Carrinmgton in New York in July for the WBC interim title. Loko had scored three wins whilst fighting in Nigeria.

PORTLAND, ME, USA: WELTER: BRANDON BERRY (33-8-2) W RTD 3 JUAN PENA (32-16-1). SUPER WELTER: CASEY STREETER (15-2-2) W PTS 8 DENZEL WHITLEY (14-2-1).
Berry vs. Pena
BERRY goes over old ground as he again beats PENA inside the distance. After a competitive first round Berry used his better skills to outbox the limited Pena. Berry found plenty of gaps for shots to head and body with the bodywork taking the fight out of Pena and he retired in his corner at the end of the third round. He had stopped Pena in three rounds in May. Berry, 38, is 8-1 in his last 9 fights. Pena is 0-13-1 in his last 14 fights
Streeter vs. Whitley
Fighting in front of his home fans STREETER works his way to a unanimous decision over WHITLEY. No knockdowns but Streeter simply outworked Whitley who seemed to be looking to find one punch to end the fight Streeter won on scores of 78-74 twice and 80-72 and retains the New England title. After winning his first 14 fights Whitley was 0-1-1 going into this one.

WILKES-BARRE, PA, USA: SUPER FEATHER: HAVEN BRADY Jr (17-0) W TKO 1 YEYERY CASTILLO (14-1).
In a clash of unbeaten fighters BRADY takes out CASTILLO in the first. Brady shook Castillo with a couple of left hooks and then chased Castillo across the ring. Another left hook had Castillo desperately hanging on but as Brady connected with two more hooks the referee stopped the fight. Brady ,23, a former Youth champion, gets his seventh win by KO/TKO and continues to make steady progress. Dominican Castillo found Brady’s power too hot to handle.
