Chess enthusiasts in the Metropolis were treated to an unforgettable display of skill, determination, and resilience as eight-year-old Marius Constante was the star of the show, putting on a breathtaking performance.
The incoming Grade 3 pupil from Novaliches, Quezon City, faced his experienced and older rival at the conclusion of the two-day (Saturday and Sunday) Metropolitan Chess Club Standard Chess Tournament held at Starmall Complex, Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City, hosted by former Olympian WNM Mila Emperado.
Constante opened his campaign in sizzling fashion, defeating Kyrie Fernandez in the first round, but fell short to veteran campaigner Leo Aldrin Caraig in the second round.
But the much-determined Philippine chess wizard bounced back, beating Marlon Bautista in the third round, Carla Canizares in the fourth round, Paul Kira Jallorina in the fifth round, and Marian Calimbo in the sixth and penultimate round.
However, Constante yielded to senior player Arnel Ellis in the seventh and final round.
Constante finished 8th overall with 5.0 points in seven outings, on account of five wins and two losses.
"It felt really exciting and amazing, and I felt proud of my game and how I played," said the young and amiable Marius.
Mary Ann Zabanal Constante, proud mother of Marius, had something to say: "Thank you, Sir Jojo Legaspi and Coach Noel Dela Cruz, for providing utmost support to Marius. With their support in Marius’ tournaments and training, he was able to perform well in the tournaments,” she said.
"It was a moment of high drama as the young prodigy (Marius Constante) from Novaliches, Quezon City, displayed composure beyond his years, edging out his opponent in the decisive encounter," said Chief Arbiter Eduardo Campos Jr.
Roberto Biron tallied 6.5 points to **en route** the title, followed by Emmanuel Barbosa who notched 6.0 points for solo second place.
Arnel Ellis, Janmyl Tisado, and two-time Asian Senior champion IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad finished the tournament with similar 5.5 points. -Marlon Bernardino-
