ROXAS CITY, the Seafood Capital of the Philippines, will become the chess capital of the country for one day in August.

The 4th edition of the Eduardo B. Basilonia Invitational Open Rapid Chess Tournament, a prestigious event, will bring together the country’s leading players for one day of fun and excitement to celebrate chess and the people in this city, well-known as the center of education, trade, economic activities, and logistics in Northern Panay.

Dubbed "Touchmove, Touch Now, Move Later," the event will be held on August 24, 2025, at the Atrium, SM City Mall, Roxas City, Capiz.

No less than GM Daniel Quizon, GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., and GM Darwin Laylo are among the early players who have signified their intention to participate in the upcoming tournament.

Chess enthusiast Eduardo B. Basilonia, the main organizer of the one-day rapid event, said Roxas City is ready.

“Roxas City, through Imprinta Advertising Services, is ready to put its best face forward to welcome chess players and participants in the one-day rapid tournament,” said Basilonia, who is also a media practitioner.

“Roxas City, which is noted for its stunning travel destinations and delectable food offerings, is ready. This will also serve as a good avenue for promoting grassroots development and recognition of chess competitions in the country,” he added.

"Watch out. Mark the date, August 24, 2025. This year's biggest rapid invitational open chess tournament will showcase the nation's brightest and top woodpushers in Roxas City and Capiz province soon," Basilonia concluded.

Assisting Basilonia in the event are National Master Francis Jocson and other Visayas-based chess officials.

The champion will bring home the lion’s share of P100,000; the runner-up will receive P50,000; the third placer will pocket P30,000; the fourth placer will bring home P20,000, while the fifth place will get P10,000. Cash prizes will also be given to the sixth up to the 13th placers.

The top players in the kiddie, female, junior, vintage, and senior categories will receive special awards and cash prizes. -Marlon Bernardino-
