Dableo Second in Sydney Standard Tournament

INTERNATIONAL Master Ronald Dableo finished second at the Sydney International Open 2025 Standard chess tournament held April 23 to 27, 2025, at the Novotel West HQ, Conference Room in Sydney, Australia.

The Sampaloc, Manila-based Dableo improved his performance after finishing in 3rd place in the blitz chess tournament earlier.

The head coach of the multi-titled University of Santo Tomas chess team closed out the nine rounds with a total of 7 points on account of six wins, two draws, and one loss, behind the champion Grandmaster Guha Mitrabha of India, who scored 7.5 points.

Dableo, one of the top players of the Philippine Army chess team, raised his ELO standard chess rating by 13.2 points to 2376.

Dableo already has three (3) grandmaster norms but needs to raise his live rating from 2376 to 2500 to complete his GM title status.

Dableo defeated Michael Steadman of New Zealand and FM Jason Hu of Australia in the first and second rounds, respectively.

He snapped his second-match winning streak when he had a draw against Tejas Datar of Australia in the third round.

Dableo toppled FM Felix Xie of New Zealand in the fourth round but yielded to GM Mitrabha in the fifth round.

Dableo bounced back after beating FM Anna-Maja Kazarian of the Netherlands in the sixth round, then drew with GM Jacek Stopa of Poland in the seventh round.

However, Dableo went on to win the last two rounds against FM Sterling Bayaca of Australia (Round 8) and GM Sayantan Das of India (Round 9).

GM Das and GM Zhao Zong-Yuan of Australia settled for third to fourth place with 6.5 points, while FM Reyaansh Chakrabarty of Australia and IM David Cannon of Australia wound up in fifth to sixth place with 6.0 points.

Rounding out the top 10 were seventh-place IM Gary Lane of Australia (5.5 points), eighth-place GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. of the Philippines (5.5 points), ninth-place CM Hu Yifei of Australia (5.0 points), and tenth-place FM Xie (5.0 points).

They are very accommodating and have strong bonding; they set time to visit and cheer for us in the tournament, treat us to lunch or dinner, and even gave us *pampasalubong* for the Philippines. Sir Allan Laurente even hosted a despedida and karaoke party at their residence.

Meanwhile, Ronald Nonles ended up in 21st place in the challenger section with 5.0 points, Johnny Miranda Teves in 43rd place with 5.0 points, while IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad was in 51st place with 4.5 points.

WFM Supreetha Potluri of India took the challenger section title with 7.5 points.
