Gallegos, CPC captures IIEE Western Visayas Regional elimination chess tournament

Arnamel John Gallegos of Colegio de la Purisima Concepción (CPC) together with his teammates Renz Daliva, Keven Del Norte and Chyrey Erojo bested the Capiz State University (CAPSU) chess team, 18-6. Gallegoz and Daliva also captured the individual honor finishing 1st and 2nd while CAPSU Tristan Rafael Rabino placed 3rd. The Chess tournament is part of the IIEE National Golden Chess elimination for the Western Visayas Region (WVR). The top 3 players will advance to the inter-island qualifier battling Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Southern Mindanao and Western Mindanao on September 13, 2025. The top 2 teams in this inter-island will join the top 2 of the inter-Luzon qualifier among Bicol, Metro Manila, Southern Luzon, Northern Luzon and Central Luzon region with the 5th team to compete in a single round robin will be from Foreign region.

Gallego represented Western Visayas Region Athletic Association (WVRAA) together with NM Cyril Telesforo in 2017 Palarong Pambansa where WVRAA had tied score from 3rd to 9th place with other regions which was won by Julius Gonzales and Jeth Morado of National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA). He was also the Gold medalist in chess blitz secondary boys in WVRAA 2018. Last year, he rank 21 among 99 participants in the 6th Capiztahan Chess FIDE Rated Tournament which was won by IM Oliver Dimakiling.

“Chess is much as life, the learning is to manage your tactics and time, do not count on your pace, focus on your goal and simplify,” says IIEE Capiz Internal Vice President Leo Bactol who organized the regional sports together with former IIEE Capiz president Arnel Abagatnan in coordination with the IIEE National Golden sports committee chairman and vice chairman Menandro Lim and Ervin Fernandez. The tournament opening was participated by the IIEE National President Alberto Herrera Jr., 2022 IIEE National President Feliciano Padua III, IIEE Western Visayas Governor Marlon Balbuena, IIEE Capiz President Abner Palete, among others.

Aside from chess, the other sports results in the IIEE Western Visayas Regional Conference which was held in Capiz, Roxas City last April 24 were 3x3 and 5x5 basketball and bowling. In 3x3 basketball, champion IIEE Negros Occidental Chapter won over the 1st Runner up IIEE Capiz, 12-8 whole on 5x5 basketball Champion IIEE Capiz beat 1st runner up IIEE Aklan, 62-60. In bowling, the winners are IIEE Capiz - 1st Place, IIEE Iloilo - 2nd Place and IIEE Negros Occidental - 3rd Place. Other Chapters that participated are IIEE North Negros and IIEE Antique.-Marlon Bernardino-
