Cebuano Caparino in a tie for lead in Bangkok tourney; Bernardino bounces back

Bangkok, Thailand---Diego Abraham Caparino remained on top after two rounds in the 22nd Bangkok Chess Club Open Monday, April 14,2025 at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Riverside Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Cebu City native Caparino outclassed Siya Sagar of India to raise his score to 2.0 points.

"I hope to sustain my momentum," said Caparino.

International Master Paulo Bersamina, International Master Michael Concio Jr., FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca and Marc Kevin Labog also carried the good fight for the Filipino campaigners.
Bersamina toppled Tom Barbe of Belgium, Concio edged countryman Tyrhone James Tabernilla, Arca dealt Haoxuan Zhang of China and Labog nipped Huy Hoang Le of Vietnam.

Also with perfect 2.0 points are top seed GM Jan Gustafsson of Germany, 3rd seed GM Evgeny Romanov of Macedonia, 4th seed GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India, 5th seed GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy of Ukraine, 6th seed GM Babu M R Lalit of India, 7th seed GM Stephen J Gorgon of England and 1996 Philippine Junior Champion FM Robert Suelo, who is the currently head coach of Laos chess team.

Gustafsson waylaid FM Myat Aung Kyaw of Myanmar, Romanov trounced Vo Quoc Bao Tran of Vietnam, Ganguly dismantled Ron Hoffman of the Netherlands, Bernadskiy walloped Erik Tam of Canada, Llait beat NM Phil Martin Casiguran of the Philippines , Gordon smashed FM Ko Ohn Ko of Myanmar and Suelo clobbered Suyog Bagul Aaradhya of Singapore.
2nd seed, former world championship challenger GM Nigel Short of England split the points with Yasseen De Herdt of Belgium.

After opening a heartbreaking loss, Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. defeated Nakorn Nakthip of Thailand with black in round two of the 22nd Bangkok Chess Club Challenger section. The 47-year-old Bernardino prevailed after 54 moves of Sicilian Defense.

With the win, Bernardino was tied at 28th to 71st placers in the company of his third round opponent Peerathat Asvahem of Thailand.
Bernardino yielded to Souminta Yomvilath of Laos in round one.

"I hope to do well in this event and gain some elo rating points," said Bernardino, an online Arena Grandmaster.

Among those who are supporting his chess campaign are ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO Dominic Edgard Cabangon, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) chairman and CEO Alejandro “Al” Tengco, Mayor Joy Belmonte, Mayor Jon Jon Ferrer, Mr. Jessie Villasin and Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Teroso Panga.

Meanwhile, Woman National Master Arvie Lozano, John Paul De Guzman, Remark Bartolome, John Lance Valencia and James Henry Calacday of the Philippines posted their second consecutive wins to create a 20-way tie for first placers in the Challengers section.-Marlon Bernardino-
