KAMBOSOS JR LAUDS SPECIAL MATCHROOM IN THE COMMUNITY LINK-UP AFTER WHOLESOME TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

PhilBoxing.com

Former Undisputed Lightweight king, joined by Eddie Hearn, Skye Nicolson and Cherneka Johnson, visited The Legends Gym where he first trained as a kid

George Kambosos Jr is ready to roll back the years when he faces Jake Wyllie this Saturday – live worldwide on DAZN and sponsored by Riyadh Season – after making a special visit to the place that helped kickstart his journey in boxing.

The former Undisputed Lightweight World Champion steps up to the Super-Lightweight division for the very first time this weekend at Sydney’s Qudos Arena, looking to lay down a marker for a future World Title shot.

And Kambosos was involved in a lively first Face-Off at the same Legends Gym where he started boxing as a youngster going head-to-head with Aussie rival Wyllie, who stepped in earlier this week as a replacement for original opponent Daud Yordan.

Paying homage to his roots, the 31-year-old, joined by Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn and WBC Women’s World Featherweight Champion Skye Nicolson, made a wholesome return to his amateur roots to inspire the next generation of Australia’s future boxing stars.

“I am humbled and grateful to be aligning myself with this collaboration between powerhouse promoter Matchroom Boxing and the Legends Life Foundation,” said Kambosos Jr, speaking ahead of Thursday’s Press Conference.

“We live in a very different world these days and the youth are the future. The Legends Gym has been doing remarkable work for many years and I remember being there early in my career.

"I always noticed it was a gym that tried to help troubled youth in the community so I think this initiative will be helpful in other areas in trying to give these kinds of opportunities”.

Legends Life Foundation’s (LLF) mission is to bridge the gap between grassroots and professional sport, providing disadvantaged youth access to coaching, financial support, and pathways to competition across Australia.

Kambosos Jr, Nicolson, WBA Bantamweight Champion Cherneka Johnson and Hearn took part in an exclusive Q&A session with the local young people in attendance to share their insights into the world of boxing – and to encourage their message of how participation in the sport that can help them both inside and outside of the ring.

"At Legends Life Foundation, we believe boxing has the power to change lives,” said Edith Rogers. Co-Founder & Managing Director at Legends Life Foundation.

"This collaboration with Matchroom Boxing is a massive step in our mission to get more young people off the streets and into boxing gyms with a positive, disciplined environment where they can grow, learn, and thrive.

"With the support of Matchroom in the Community, we’re creating real opportunities for the next generation to build brighter futures in and outside the ring.”

Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn was thrilled to visit the Legends Gym and believes boxing is booming in Australia.

He said: “This sport really does change lives. And showing up for local communities is perhaps more important now more than ever.

“Everyone starts their journey somewhere, just like George did here. So, it is fitting that we will collaborate with Edith and the team to support the incredible work they are doing. I can’t wait to meet everyone.”

Matchroom Boxing’s Head of Community Development, Alex Le Guevel, added: "This collaboration with Legends Life Foundation is testament to our unwavering commitment to grassroots boxing worldwide.

"Our shared vision of empowering young athletes and strengthening local communities has no borders - evident in our work here in Sydney, Australia, arguably as far as you could get from our HQ in Essex.

"This event proves that no matter the distance, our dedication to the future of the sport remains as strong as ever.”
