Kang vs. Owan Instant Classic with Four Knockdowns – Owan Stops Kang in Thrilling WBO Global Featherweight Championship (Video)

PhilBoxing.com

Cebu City, Philippines – February 8, 2025, will forever be etched in boxing history as the night two warriors delivered a masterpiece inside the ring. The Binukbukay sa Sugbu event at the Nu-Star Resort & Casino witnessed an unforgettable clash between South Korea’s WBO Global Featherweight Champion, Kang Jong Seon, and Japan’s rising star, Ryuto Owan. What unfolded was a fight of the year candidate, a brutal yet beautiful display of skill, heart, and determination that left the crowd breathless and on the edge of their seats.

In a battle reminiscent of the legendary Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo war, Kang and Owan pushed each other to their absolute limits, trading punches, knockdowns, and moments of sheer brilliance. But in the end, it was Owan who emerged victorious by just being a little bit better, a little bit sharper and seized the tiny bit of opportunity when it opened up, stopping Kang in the 9th round to claim the WBO Global Featherweight Championship and cement his place among the sport’s elite.

The Fight: A Tale of Grit, Skill, and Unyielding Will

From the opening bell, it was clear that this was no ordinary fight. Owan, a sparring partner of pound-for-pound king Naoya Inoue, came in with precision and poise, using his sharp jabs and footwork to control the early rounds. By the end of the third round, Owan was ahead on the scorecards, landing clean shots and keeping Kang at bay.

But Kang, the #4-ranked WBO contender, is no stranger to adversity. In the 4th round, he turned the tide by scoring a knockdown, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The champion’s elite-level skill and determination were on full display as he began to impose his will in close-quarter combat, landing devastating combinations to the head and body.

The middle rounds were a spectacle of heart and skill. In the 5th and 6th rounds, both fighters traded brutal exchanges, each refusing to back down. Kang’s rapid combinations and aggression were matched by Owan’s precision and resilience, creating a perfect storm of action that had fans roaring with every punch.

The 7th round was a microcosm of the entire fight. Kang dropped Owan early with a vicious combination, but the Japanese challenger, showing the heart of a lion, rose to his feet and returned the favor, dropping Kang later in the same round. The crowd erupted as both fighters dug deep, proving why they belong at the highest level of the sport.

The 8th round was pure magic. Kang unleashed furious combinations, targeting Owan’s head and body, but Owan answered every shot with his lightning-quick jabs, each one finding its mark. The back-and-forth action was scintillating, enthralling, and utterly unforgettable.

But the 9th round would be the final chapter in this epic saga. Owan seized control, connecting with hard shots to Kang’s head and body. The Korean warrior, ever the fighter, tried to retaliate, but Owan’s relentless assault was too much. After Owan pinned Kang against the ropes, Owan seized the moment to unleash a barrage of unanswered punches, forcing Thai referee Surat Soikrachang to step in and stop the fight at 2:59 of the round.

The Aftermath: A New Champion is Crowned

Ryuto Owan (14-2-0, 9 KOs) had done the unthinkable. He had dethroned a champion, overcome adversity, and delivered a performance for the ages. The Japanese challenger, now the new WBO Global Featherweight Champion, stood tall in the center of the ring, his hand raised in victory.

For Kang Jong Seon (20-2-2, 11 KOs), it was a heartbreaking end to a valiant effort. The Korean warrior had given everything he had, but on this night, Owan was simply the better man.

Fight Analysis: What Made This Fight Special

Before the fighters climbed to the ring for the opening bout of the evening, WBO Vice-President and fight supervisor Leon Panoncillo, who had watched innumerable fights all over the world, told us to watch the main event, "because this will be a good boxing match."

But this was more than just a boxing match; it was a showcase of everything that makes the sport great.

Skill: Both fighters displayed elite-level technique. Kang’s power and aggression were matched by Owan’s precision and footwork.

Heart: Neither man was willing to back down. The knockdowns, the exchanges, and the relentless pace were a testament to their unyielding will.

Drama: From the knockdowns to the referee’s stoppage, every moment was filled with tension and excitement.

What’s Next for Owan and Kang?
For Ryuto Owan, the future is bright. With this victory, he has announced himself as a force to be reckoned with in the featherweight division. A potential showdown with any of the division's top contenders is now wide open.

For Kang Jong Seon, this loss is a setback, but not the end. His performance proved that he belongs among the elite, and with his skill and determination, he will undoubtedly be back.

Final Thoughts: A Night to Remember
The Binukbukay sa Sugbu, the maiden boxing event of promoter Dr. Winley dela Fuente's OX-KBDF, delivered one of the greatest fights in recent memory. Kang Jong Seon and Ryuto Owan left everything in the ring, giving fans a fight that will be talked about for years to come.

In the end, it was Owan’s night, but both fighters emerged as winners in the eyes of the boxing world. This was more than just a fight; it was a celebration of the sport, a reminder of why we love boxing, and a night that will forever be remembered as one of the greatest in Cebu’s rich boxing history.

In the other championship fights, Aketeliete Yelejian of China stopped Genesis Servania of the Philippines in the 10th round to win the vacant WBO Oriental Welterweight title while Rodex Piala outpoints Yeerjialahasi Laayibieke of China the WBO Oriental Super Featherweight title.
