Concio, Arca off to good start in Tagaytay chess tourney By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Mon, 14 Oct 2024 Tagaytay City---International Master Michael Concio Jr. and FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca got off to a blazing start by posting back to back victories in the second round of the Asian Juniors Chess Championships Standard competition at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City on Monday, October 14, 2024. Concio defeated Arena FIDE Master Sureka Akshat of India after 40 moves of Trompowsky Opening while Arca subdued International Master Aswath S of India after 44 moves of Caro-kann defense. "We hope to perform well in this event and gain some Elo rating points," said Concio, who brought down Yu Chen Yu of Chinese-Taipei in Sunday's opening round. "The first two rounds are one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you're going to perform," added Arca, winner over Almwayne Magpusao in Round 1. The usual suspects made their presence felt early. The top seeds are Grandmaster Aleksey Grebnev and International Master Artem Uskov of Russia, International Master Rohith Krishna S and Candidate Master Yash Bharadia of India and International Master Munkhdalai Amilal of Mongolia. Grebnev toppled International Master Anto Cristiano F Manish of India, Uskov waylaid FIDE Master Imangali Akhilbay of Kazakhstan, Krishna crushed FIDE Master Arjun Adireddy of India while Amilal edged Davin Sean Romualdez of the Philippines.
