Catterall Out For Affirmation, Prograis Seeking Redemption

PhilBoxing.com

One major fight worth following this October is that between UK's Jack Catterall and American creole Regis Prograis with the former going all out for affirmation and the latter seeking redemption.

Catterall will meet Prograis in an all important junior welterweight 10 round bout with the winner advancing to a possible world title fight early next year against any of the major titleholders.

Catterall and Prograis will headline a Matchroom promotion event at the Coop Live Arena in Manchester on October 26, 2024.

The two experienced contrasting fortunes in the previous couple of years with Catterall coming back strong from a controversial 2022 defeat to erstwhile undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor with a streak of wins including a revenge non title points win over Taylor to spring back to contention.

Prograis himself suffer an earlier points loss to Taylor in a final title unification in October 2019 losing his WBC crown in the process. He bounced back by re-winning the same WBC title that has since been stripped from Taylor via 11th round knockout of the previously once defeated and highly regarded Jose Zepeda on November 26, 2022. But after a successful defense via 12 round split decision over Danielito Zorilla in New Orleans in June 2023, Prograis again hit a major road bump losing his title via surprising one sided decision to Devin Haney in December 2023 in California.

Catterall holds a record of 29 victories including 13 by KO against a single loss to Taylor which he has since avenged.

Meanwhile, the losses to Taylor and Haney remain the only blotches in Prograis' record that includes also 29 wins, 23 by KO.

Catterall will be going out for a win over Prograis that will cement his reputation as one of the best 140 pounders in the world today.

On the other hand, Prograis hopes for a clear win over Catterall to bounce back to title contention.

The junior welterweight or super lightweight is among the most loaded divisions in boxing currently with Haney holding the WBC belt and Teofimo Lopez as WBO champion. The other champions are Jose Valenzuela (WBA) and Liam Paro (IBF).

Aside from Catterall and Prograis, prominent names also include ex titlist KO artist Subriel Matias, Alberto Puello who is now the WBC regular titlist with Haney as champion in recess, Andy Hiraoka who is the WBA interim titlist, Sandor Martin and Arnold Barboza.
