SPORTS FACTS AND FIGURES 79: SHANE MOSLEY WANTS MANNY PACQUIAO

PhilBoxing.com

Last Saturday in Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack, 53-year-old former multi-weight champion "Sugar” Shane Mosley returned to the ring in exhibition form and came out with a five-round decision victory over coach-turned-fighter Bob Kofroth, the owner and trainer at Elite Edge Boxing in Malvern, as part of a celebrity boxing event promoted by Damon Feldman.

The fight, billed as a "World Light-heavyweight Title" fight, had the two fighters fighting just one-minute rounds. Mosley won the decision, and observers saw Mosley fought well despite being overweight than his prime years.

Mosley then called out Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya. “Pacquiao. I want to fight Pacquiao, man,” Mosley told Fight Hub TV when asked who he wants to fight next. “I would fight Oscar [De La Hoya] but Oscar don’t wanna fight, he be talking all this mess but he doesn’t want to fight. I don’t understand it. He should keep my name out of his mouth."

Pacquiao is still looking forward to box again. The 45-year-old former eight-weight world champion fought an exhibition and arguably looked slower than Mosley boxing lately. Pacquiao took a draw against kickboxer Rukiya Anpo last July 28.

Shane Mosley was born September 7, 1971 in Lynwood, California, USA. He is known by his nickname "Sugar" Shane Mosley, and has held multiple world championships in three weight classes, including the IBF lightweight title; the WBA (Super) and WBC welterweight titles; and the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring magazine light middleweight titles. He was also a lineal champion at welterweight (twice) and light middleweight.

His record includes 61 total fights, 49 wins, 41 wins by KO, 10 losses, 1 draw and 1 no contest. He defeated Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya twice, he shook Floyd Mayweather for the first time in his career in their May 2010 encounter, and four of his 10 losses came against Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

In 1998, the Boxing Writers Association of America named Mosley as their Fighter of the Year. He was also given the same accolade by the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2000 and 2001 he was named the world's best active boxer, pound for pound, by The Ring.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley was a showdown for the WBO welterweight championship. The bout was held on May 7, 2011, at MGM Grand, in Las Vegas. Pacquiao won by unanimous decision and retained his WBO welterweight championship. The fight was Manny Pacquiao's first PPV fight on Showtime boxing.

In the third round, Pacquiao knocked Mosley down, but was able to rise up. Because of that knockdown, Mosley backpedaled and seemed to be evading Pacquiao, throwing occasional punches. Mosley pushed Pacquiao and was floored in the tenth round as referee Kenny Bayless ruled it a knockdown. The judges however contradicted that in their scores.

Television replays showed that Pacquiao was punching his opponent and got off balance, slipped and was floored in time for Mosley's right hand to connect and Pacquiao's right foot trapped under Mosley's left foot. Bayless apologized later for the erroneous call to Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's coach, after the fight. Pacquiao won by lopsided decision 119–108, 120–108 and 120–107.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James says the anticipation of playing together with his eldest son Bronny in the NBA has given him "a lot of life". James is set to start a record-equalling 22nd season with current holder Vince Carter in the NBA. He is about to make history by playing alongside with son Bronny, 19, who was drafted by the Lakers with the 55th pick in June.

The 39-year-old NBA superstar will come back into the season fresh from his Team USA stint to win gold at the Olympic Games in Paris during the summer. But his added motivation this year is that he is revitalized by playing with one of his children.
