Laylo wins 4th Cong. Dujali Open

GRAND Master Darwin Laylo of Marikina City beat NM Jayson Salubre and Johnnel Balquin in a tiebreak at 7.0 points to win the 4th Cong. Alan R. Dujali National Chess Open held last September 28 and 29 at the Payag Grill and Folk House, Maria Clara Resorts compound in Panabo City.
Laylo only needed a draw in the final Round 8 against Allan Cantojos of Gingoog City.
Laylo immediately scored five points with victories over Leo Mirana of Manila, Rhynan Arce of Cotabato, Bonn Tibod of Cebu, Nazario Ubanan and Johnnel Balquin of Cagayan de Oro.
But in the 6th round, Laylo settled to a draw with white pieces with IM Ronald Dableo of Luzon.
Laylo again won against NM Giovanni Mejia of Luzon in black pieces in Round 7.
Salubre of Panabo lost to Dableo in Round 5 but recovered in the next three games with victories over Eric Abanco, NM Henry Roger Lopez of Panabo and NM Giovanni Mejia.
After losing to Laylo, Balquin of Cagayan de Oro City bounced back with three straight victories against city mate Bran Jose, NM Joey Albert Florendo of Zamboanga and Dableo.
Tied with 6.5 points are Dableo and Cantojos while with 6.0 points were Lopez, Florendo, Ubanan, James Bulicatin, Sherwin Tiu, NM Macacuna Macala, Allen Mirano and AGM Irwin Aton.
Meanwhile, Jess Raphael Aballar of Agusan del Norte only settled a draw in the final round to score a total of 5.5 points and win the 18 years old and below division.
Second was Gabriel Siano of Manila with 5.0 points followed by NM Keith Adriane Ilar, Jerome Pullos and Ignatious dela Cruz with 4.5.
Cong. Alan Dujali was the organizer while the tournament director was NM Darwin Bermudez.
The arbiters were IA James Infiesto, NA Alfred Moulic, NA Ramil Langamon and Homer Rotulo.
