Jerusalem, Taduran Lead 25 Pinoy Boxers in WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO World Rankings By Teodoro Medina Reynoso PhilBoxing.com Thu, 26 Sep 2024 Current world minimumweight titlists Melvin Jerusalem (WBC) and Pedro Taduran (IBF) lead a total of 25 Filipino fighters in the latest world rankings of the four major sanctioning bodies. This has been culled from the BoxingScene which compiles the official list of world champions and top 15 contenders of the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO from the heavyweight down to the minimumweight. As of the present, Jerusalem and Taduran are the only Filipino world champions. They separately won their respective world titles by unseating brothers Yudai and Ginjiro Shigeoka in their hometurf of Japan. Gringo recently successfully defended his WBC title by lopsided decision over Mexican Luis Castillo in Mandaluyong City. Taduran is set to defend his IBF crown versus Chinese top challenger Dian Xing Zhu n Jeju, South Korea this November. The world rated Filipino fighters are spread across seven of the total 17 weight divisions, mostly at the minimumweight and light flyweight. But no Filipino is rated at featherweight. They include ( highest ratings only): Vic Saludar #1 at WBO, and Joey Canoy #3 WBC and #5 IBF at minimumweight; Christian Araneta #1 IBF, Arvin John Paciones #2 WBA, Jayson Vayson #3 IBF and Regie Suganob #3 WBO at light flyweight; Vince Paras #4 WBC and Esneth Domingo #5 IBF at flyweight; Jayr Raquinel #12 IBF and KJ Cataraja #15 IBF at super flyweight; Reymart Gaballo #10 WBO at bantamweight; Marlon Tapales #2 WBC, Carl Jammes Martin #2 WBO and Johnriel Casimero #6 WBO at super bantamweight; and Charly Suarez #1 WBO and Mark Magsayo #4 WBC at super featherweight. The other Pinoy fighters who also made the ratings are Jerwin Ancaja, Vincent Astrolabio, Lorenz Dumag-ay, Rene Mark Cuarto, Jake Amparo, Ar Ar Andales and Ian Abne. Araneta is already the mandatory challenger in waiting for the winner of the IBF light flyweight title fight between defending champion Sive Nontsingha of South Africa and Japanese ex WBC titlist Masamichi Yabuki of Japan set this October in Japan. A repeat win by Paras over former two division titlist Hiroto Kyoguchi this October 13 in the undercard of Casimero's very important bout versus Saul Sanchez in Yokohama, Japan will most definitely boost his chance for a world title fight at flyweight. With their high rankings, Saludar and Suarez may also see them closer to world title crack in their respective divisions sooner or later.
