NM Bernardino rules Tarlac Open rapid chess tourney

Tarlac City---Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. reigned supreme in the Lady of Ransom (LOR) Open Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Lady of Ransom covered court, Barangay Matatalaib in Tarlac City on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Bernardino, the pride of Quezon City and Mandaluyong City, bagged the P2,000 top prize of the rapid tilt organized by Henry and Regina Calacday in association with Kap. Henry 'Pogi' Oliveros, Sitio Chairman Eric 'Magic' Bondoc and Home Owners Association president Christopher Bautista after registering the highest output of 5.5 points in seven outings on account of four wins and three draws.

“I am very happy with my latest victory here in Tarlac City," said Bernardino, who hails from Binalonan, Pangasinan who is on a roll of winning the championship trophy.

The 47-year-old Bernardino, a veteran sportswriter and radio commentator, is fresh from winning the Laos international Open Chess Championship last September 1 to 6, 2024 in Vientiane, Laos and the 5th edition of Single Knockout Armageddon Tournament (SiKAT) held at the Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District, Mandaluyong City last September 13, 2024 where he also won the 2nd Edition.

Among those who are supporting his chess campaign here and abroad are 1996 RP Junior Chess Champion FM Robert Suelo Jr. and ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO D. Edgard Cabangon.
National Master Romeo Alcodia of San Manuel, Tarlac and Raymart Manicdo of Gerona, Tarlac wound up second and third with identical 5.0 points.

Eric Calacday of San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija and Zyluj Ezekiel Gacutan of Victoria, Tarlac occupied the fourth to fifth spots with 4.5 points each followed by solo sixth place James Henry Calacday of Tarlac City who totes 4.0 points.

Rounding up to the top 10 were seventh Fiscal Judylito Ulanday of Tayug, Pangasinan (3.5 points), eight Jericho Calacday of San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija (3.5 points), ninth Raven Martinez of Tarlac City (3.0 points) and tenth Mark Joseph Apelacio of Gerona, Tarlac (2.0 points).

Marlone Salameda of Tarlac City won the Matatalaib division while ten years old Kenzo Rafael Capili of Tarlac City took the kiddies category.

Meanwhile, NM Bernardino once again showed that his chess skills remain unparalleled.

In the 11 simultaneous games he played last Saturday, September 21, 2024 at the Metro Town Mall in Tarlac City, NM Bernardino won 7 games and drew four.

NM Bernardino was held to a draw by the following players, Martinez, 12 years old Roman Prince Nool of Moncada, Tarlac , Michael Lance Pineda of Tarlac City, and 9 years old Celestine Francheska V. Paras of Angeles City, Pampanga.-Marlon Bernardino-
