SPORTS FACTS AND FIGURES 75: PROPOSED MANNY PACQUIAO WORLD TITLE FIGHT AGAINST MARIO BARRIOS IN PERIL

PhilBoxing.com

Manny Pacquiao was looking for a fight to win back the championship belt this year and it would be against Mario Barrios, the WBC welterweight champion. It was reported that previously both camps have entered into negotiations.

Barrios of San Antonio, Texas, US, became a regular champion at the superlightweight division before moving up and winning the interim title at 147 pounds against Yordenis Ugas. He defended that belt against Fabián Maidana before being promoted as full-fledged champion when undisputed champion Terence Crawford was declared "champion in recess" by the World Boxing Council.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman gave his nod on the bout provided they should pass medical checkups and both camps continued to arrange the bout. Manny Pacquiao drew with Japanese mixed martial artist Rukiya Anpo in a three-round exhibition in Saitama, Japan. He fought slower than his previous fights and it was obvious father time had caught the eight-division world champion.

Pacquiao’s team insisted that their fighter has to fight before the end of the year because the former senator will again throw his hat into politics next year. But that won't be against Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs), who agreed to make a title defense against Abel Ramos on the undercard of Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson on November 15 in Texas. This will be Barrios' first defense of the championship. Ramos of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, US is 28-6-2 with 22 KOs and currently ranked number eight in the division with the WBC.

The Filipino fighting icon last fought in a unanimous decision loss to Yordenis Ugas on August 21, 2021 at the T-Mobile Arena, Paradise, Nevada, U.S., losing the WBA welterweight title that he had won against Keith Thurman at age 40 years, 215 days, the current record for oldest champion in welterweight history.

Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings suffered their worst loss with the biggest losing margin in franchise history, a 131-82 hammering by the San Miguel Beermen at the PBA Governors’ Cup on the same night Beermen Marcio Lassiter made history by setting the all-time 3-point shot record. He shot back-to-back-to-back baskets to break Jimmy Alapag’s record of 1,250 three-point shots that went unbroken for nearly eight years.

PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III said it was the biggest winning margin in San Miguel franchise history, while giving it's sister team the worst losing margin in Ginebra’s franchise history and in Tim Cone’s coaching career in the Philippine pro league. It was also the eighth all-time most lopsided game in the 49-year history of the league.
