SPORTS FACTS AND FIGURES 74: MELVIN JERUSALEM'S CAMP THANKFUL FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST LUIS CASTILLO WILL BE HELD IN THE PHILIPPINES By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Tue, 17 Sep 2024 According to CDN Digital, trainer Michael Domingo thanked promoter JC Manangquil and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao for successfully bringing to the Philippines Melvin Jerusalem’s defense of his World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight title instead of having it in Mexico. Jerusalem’s first title defense will be the main event of “Blow by Blow” on September 22 at the Mandaluyong College gymnasium. * * * Jerusalem won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight title by stopping Masataka Taniguchi by 2nd round TKO on January 6, 2023 at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, Osaka, Japan. He lost it four months later on May 27 when he fought Puerto Rican Oscar Collazo in Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California, U.S., losing via stoppage in the 7th round. * * * He was world champion again when he defeated Yudai Shigeoka by split decision on March 31, 2024 at the International Conference Hall, Nagoya, Japan, winning the WBC mini-flyweight title. * * * “It’s a huge advantage to have the fight here,” Domingo stated. “Boss JC worked hard to make sure it would happen in the Philippines, and Melvin is thrilled to fight in front of his countrymen.” * * * Domingo said that the original plan was to stage the fight in Mexico, where the champion’s purse would have been larger. The prize if fought here won’t be as huge, but it’s the minimum amount required for a world title fight. Jerusalem's opponent Luis “Flechita” Castillo, the number one contender, has arrived from Mexico, and Domingo sees a potential advantage for Jerusalem. * * * He believes that the Mexican fighter, who is undefeated but has never fought outside his home country, may have a hard time to acclimatize to the Philippine conditions and adjust to jet lag. These factors have a significant influence in boxing. * * * The 30-year-old Jerusalem from Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, holds a record of 22 wins with 12 wins by knockouts and three losses. The 27-year-old Castillo is from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, and has a perfect record of 21-0 record, 13 by knockouts, together with one draw. * * * Here are the CompuBox Punchstats of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga title fight: Total Punches Landed/Thrown: Alvarez 201/464 (43.3%) Berlanga 119/446 (26.7%) Total Jabs Landed/Thrown: Alvarez 68/193 (35.2%) Berlanga 54/260 (20.8%) Total Power Punches: Alvarez 133/271 (49.1%) Berlanga 165/186 (34.9%) * * * All Time NBA Scoring Leaders: Rank Player Pts 1 LeBRON JAMES 40,474 2 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 38,387 3 Karl Malone 36,928 4 Kobe Bryant 33,643 5 Michael Jordan 32,292 6 Dirk Nowitzki 31,560 7 Wilt Chamberlain 31,419 8 KEVIN DURANT 28,942 9 Shaquille O'Neal 28,596 10 Carmelo Anthony 28,289 11 Moses Malone 27,409 12 Elvin Hayes 27,313 13 Hakeem Olajuwon 26,946 14 Oscar Robertson 26,710 15 Dominique Wilkins 26,668 16 Tim Duncan 26,496 17 Paul Pierce 26,397 18 John Havlicek 26,395 19 Kevin Garnett 26,071 20 JAMES HARDEN 25,885 Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L.
