SPORTS FACTS AND FIGURES 73: CANELO ALVAREZ WINS AGAINST EDGAR BERLANGA BY UNANIMOUS DECISION FOR HIS 26TH TITLE DEFENSE VICTORY

Saul Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his titles against Edgar Berlanga for the WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight championships at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It was his fifth straight title defense which went the distance. His last stoppage was on Caleb Plant by 11th round TKO on November 6, 2021.

Saul Canelo Alvarez, age 34, was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, is 5 ft 7 1/2 in (171 cm), with a reach of 70 1/2 in (179 cm), and is an Orthodox fighter. His official weight was 166¾ lbs. His record stands at 62 wins, 39 by KOs, 2 defeats and 2 draws.

Edgar Luis Berlanga Jr., age 27, was born in Brooklyn, New York City, U.S., and is taller at 6 ft 1 in (185 cm) with a reach of 73 in (185 cm) and is an Orthodox fighter. His official weight was 167¾ lbs. He now has a record of 22 wins, 17 by KOs, and tasted his first loss.

The judges scored it 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109 all for Canelo by unanimous decision, winning on Mexican Independence Day weekend, and his 26th successful title defense of his career.

Canelo's first loss was by a majority decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14, 2013 losing his WBC and The Ring light middleweight titles and failed to win the WBA (Super) light middleweight title.

His other loss was dealt by Dmitry Bivol by unanimous decision on May 7, 2023 at T-Mobile Arena, Paradise, Nevada, U.S. for the WBA (Super) light heavyweight title.

Bill Russell was the center of the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1956 to 1969. He was the heart and soul of the Celtics dynasty that won 11 NBA titles during his 13-year career. Russell is considered by many experts as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Next in the list of players with most NBA titles are: Sam Jones- 10, Tom Heinsohn - 8, K. C. Jones - 8, Satch Sanders - 8, John Havlicek - 8, all with the Boston Celtics. This was followed by Jim Loscutoff - 7, Frank Ramsey - 7, both with the Celtics, then Robert Horry with 7 (Houston Rockets - 2, Los Angeles Lakers - 3, and San Antonio Spurs - 2).

The players with 6 NBA titles are: Bob Cousy (Celtics), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Milwaukee Bucks - 1, Lakers - 5), and Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen both with the Chicago Bulls.

Russel was 11 time NBA champion (1957, 1959–1966, 1968, 1969), a 5 time NBA Most Valuable Player (1958, 1961–1963, 1965), a 12 time NBA All-Star (1958–1969), an NBA All-Star Game MVP (1963), a 3 time All-NBA First Team member (1959, 1963, 1965), an 8 time All-NBA Second Team member (1958, 1960–1962, 1964, 1966–1968), and an NBA All-Defensive First Team member (1969).

He was a 4 time NBA rebounding champion (1958, 1959, 1964, 1965), and an NBA anniversary team member (25th, 35th, 50th, 75th). His jersey No. 6 was retired by Boston Celtics and his No. 6 was retired by all NBA teams.
